Thread: Using PC as a DVR / DVDR

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by wild4mn
So we had a DVD recorder that had a built in hard drive so it worked much like a TIVO where we could record shows and then just delete them if we didn't think we would watch them again. It conked out and we couldn't find them anywhere! So we just bought a normal dvd recorder and its fine but we burn through the DVDs and it doesn't have a built in tuner so we have to use one of the converter...

This might be the ticket, I will have to check and make sure we have the right slots available. Also it doesn't say if it will work with Windows 7 but we don't plan to stop using the old XP PC if it works. http://www.buy.com/prod/avermedia-av...206832291.h tml

Thanks for the suggestion. I might go perusing for a new desktop this weekend and see what my options are. Most of the shows I watch we get in HD over the air and we have a whole house antenna.

I built a htpc (home theater pc) and use it as a dvr among other things. All you need is a tv tuner card and the right cables. Some random thoughts. What kind of tv will determine not only the tv tuner card but also how you are going to connect the pc to the tv. How you connect will be affected by the connections on your pc. I have a standard definition crt tv. I use an s-video cable to ...

Thanks for the input. For the TV, we have a 32" lcd which has all the inputs, but the standard monitor cord (whatever it is called) is how I have done it in the past. Audio I was going to run directly to the my cheap but serviceable RCA theater system. Space is not an issue, I will have over 2TB once I hook up the 2nd hard drive. I will have to check out that software, we ended up buying a ...

cthulhu - Since you obviously know what you are doing maybe you can help me out with this other issue. So I now have a HP w/ Windows 7 and I have been using Windows Media Center to record shows which works great except... I can't figure out how to watch the shows on another computer in my house (since they are WTV files). My googling has left me disgruntled. My original plan was to ...

WTV was introduced with the Vista TV Pack (only available on OEM machines) replacing the DVR-MS files. You can right click on them to convert to dvr-ms. There are some different utilities as well that can automate things. Of course, my laptop upgraded to W7 can't play video at all right now in 7MC. Grrr....now to find out why....

You know in my googling I read that right click thing multiple times but I do not see it when I do it on my computer. I really didn't have much success finding any free software to do it for me other than one thing that I do not understand from andy vt dvrmstoolbox so I am reluctant to experiment especially on a brand new computer.

I use win xp home on my dvr - don't ask, it was cheap at the time. GBPVR records mpg's. I guess WMC won't record in a non-proprietary file format like mpg? I've never tried watching a show on my dvr from another computer. I'd love to build another dvr for my bedroom but time and money are in short supply. I'd suggest you download gbpvr and give it try. It's free. And if you don't ...

I think I am going to give up and buy an Xbox 360. That way I don't need to have a PC in my living room at all and as far as I can tell it plays most formats including WTV without having to mess around with converting everything. That and I really like windows media center's scheduling abilities compared to dvrms and the wintv software that came with the tuner.

It does record in mpg, but it wraps the files in a container. That's why it fairly quick easy to change the format because it's just changing the wrapper.
