Thread: Use a relay for HIDs or not

Started 1 month ago by T18VW
Do most people use a relay and direct battery connection with the HIDs? I have read many different threads regarding HID installation and it seems many people are just plugging into the factory harness and not using a connection to the battery. I have read that HIDs use less power than the factory bulbs so therefore the factory harness is all that is needed. Are there any other issues ...

I was scareed of that to, but I did a plug and play installation and have had zero issues ever, just go with a reliable HID brand and you will be good to go.

Search. Some of us have had issues without the relay.

A friend also had blinking issues with his Bora (a Jetta), but after placing a relay no probs. Just try first and see if it needs relaying.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like there is no downside to installing the relay other than more work for the install. Possible issues is the relay isn't used.

I bought the plug in kit about five months ago and have yet to have any problems.

People running HIDs without relay, open up your dust caps and check the yellow power wire near the contacts. A while after running HIDs the insulation will start cracking and fall off. The startup current draw for HIDs is almost 2-3 times of the normal halogen lamps. Running current draw is definitely less. Run a relay harness.

klelmore replied 1 month ago
I've seen a lot of discussion about the current draw of HID ballasts when the HIDs are started, but I'd seen nothing quantitative. Then I saw that someone actually measured it here. There are some more excellent measurements here. Other sites list the maximum start-up current, which is at odds with what was measured, such as what we see here. None of these numbers indicates that ...

Thanks HiFiveB5 ans Sipes216 for the replies. I like the idea of the fogs a DRL. I have a drak color car and drive a lot of country roads so I like the idea of them.
