Does anyone here use underground fence for their dogs? Pros, Cons?
What can you share about it and your experience with them. Do you have a big dog or a small dog?
Petsafe is the one in question. Thanks!!
I looked into it at my previous home, but never had it installed.
Its expensive. They have to dig a trench around the outside of your yard and bury electric cable. Then your dog wears a collar that responds to a signal from the buried cable. The collar makes a noise the dog whenever he gets too close to the cable. When he crosses the cable it shocks him.
It does not work if the cable is ...
I think they're better than no fence at all, but I really don't like them.
I think it leaves the dog inside the fence vulnerable to attack by viscious dogs.
If the dog being contained is himself viscious or very defensive of his property, that will possibly encourage another dog to enter and fight with him.
And if the temptation gets too strong, the dog can get caught up in the moment ...
We have one and it has been great. I rarely even put the collar on our dog and he has learned to stay in the yard. As a matter of fact, one day I had my van parked at the curb and I wanted to take him with me and he would not leave the yard to get in the car until I put a leash on him. Our yard was not going to be easy to fence in so the electric fence was the best option for us. Our dog is a...
My mother had this. It worked for the most part, but it takes continued training of your dog. It's not something that you put in and forget about.
She had a great dane, so a big dog. There were times when he would cross the barrier, then could not come home because he was afraid of the shock. but he generally stayed inside (she was very sensitive dog). If you want to take your dog off the ...
Thanks!!! You give good advice!
I bought one to install.... because my one dog crawls UNDER the fence to get out Ive learned and the other one CLIMBS the fence to get out. They learned how to do it ONE time, and that was it - now they do it.
So now they are in this habit..... They both are very NON-aggressive dogs and literally love everyone, everything that enters our yard/...
I used to think so too Tandy, until last night when my dog was gone for 6 hours, and I had no idea if he was hit by a car, caught in a trap, etc.....
I don't know.
KeCats, if you use the underground fence with a conventional fence, make
sure you read up on how to do that. Somebody here said something about the
dogs getting trapped in the corners that way. I don't remember how that
worked, but it must be hard on the dogs.
Aww Sparkle! Thanks for sharing your Samoyed story, because my Shihtzu is probably the dumbest animal Ive ever owned. I dont know if they are all this way or just mine. Knowing my luck she is the only dumb one around. But we love her. She just bounces around with the goofiest attitude ever, not a care in the world. We went ahead and installed it today........ I cant take the risk, it's only a static correction, not a electric shock. I...
I think KeCats is trying to be a responsible pet owner in tryng to find a solution that works for her Houdini dogs. I don't have that problem. Our dogs are only out in the yard for short periods and we keep an eye on them through the window. We have an extra tall fence and they have never tried to dig their way under it. But that doesn't mean we're more rsponsible, only that our dogs are less escape prone.

This is my opinion. Why would you punish your dog with electricity? If you are a responsible pet owner, you should know where your pet is. Edited for correction.
