Thread: USB not recognized with flashdrive only

Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this. I have a Compaq Presario SR1550NX with no modifications with Windows XP SP2. My flashdrive started stating "USB device not recognized" when plugged into any USB port (front and rear). Other USB devices work in the ports and only flashdrives will not work. I have tried more than one flashdrive and they all get the USB device not recognized but ...

Hi roshcats. One of our Moderators (Jintan) saw your topic and posted this link. It's very likely that you have one or more damaged PID keys. The trick will be in finding which keys belong to your USB drives. There are sites out there that can help you identify them. Here is one (search under devices) and there may be others if your devices are not listed. I havent checked your topic ...

Ok, just for clarification. What you are speaking of could effect only flashdrives and nothing else, correct. I just wanted to ask because that is the only items that will not work, all other USB devices work fine. I was reading over this and doing all this my be above my pay grade, if you know what I mean. This is a home computer used for business everyday, I could not afford to mess it up ...

It would be a bit tricky roshcats. You would need to spend quite a bit of time researching the PID's and in all honesty, it would probably be quicker to back up your data and reinstall XP. If you rely on your computer, you should consider purchasing an external hard drive and drive imaging software such as Acronis True Image . That way, once you have made an image of your drive, you can ...

very long shot - dont know what all you tried but go into disk management and see if the drive is seen there. If so, try assigning a drive letter to it. I realized you have a device error but sometimes it is still seen. I had something similar happen to me once with an old jump drive. to go into diskmanagement - right click my computer, click on manage, under storage click ...

It would be a bit tricky roshcats. You would need to spend quite a bit of time researching the PID's and in all honesty, it would probably be quicker to back up your data and reinstall XP. If you rely on your computer, you should consider purchasing an external hard drive and drive imaging software such as Acronis True Image . That way, once you have made an image of your drive, you can restore it quite easily if something goes wrong.
