Thread: URGENT SAFETY ISSUE!!! All W163 Owners '99-'02 MUST Read!!!

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Loudgoldwing
We were joking about my "Name That Fluid" issue over the weekend. I was dripping a bit of brake fluid. I had an appointment to have the dealer look at the leak on Thursday, because they had no earlier time available. Well, I had a catastrophic brake failure today on my way to work. Fortunately, because I had practiced hitting the e-brake pedal when my seeping leak first started, I hauled ...

Glad to hear that no one was hurt. You can't deny it when you see it in black and white print. Everyone owes you a thanks for the heads up. Is it in an area that can be reached to do a little separation of the two? Mike

Not sure. The guy at Car-X said that when he put the new brake line on, he routed it around the fuel line correctly, and it was no longer an issue. He also said (which surprized me) that the fuel line showed no signs of impending failure. Go figure.

Well I have owned a 00' 430 for about a month now with 122k on it. knock on wood the only thing that has happened is the esp light comes on randomly and goes off. A rough idle one day that cleared up due to a code po306 with the cel that cleared as well. Who knows. Mike

Sorry to hear that but I believe that is an issue that has been discussed here, along with the even more dangerous fuel line that does a similar routing and the less dangerous radiator hose that rubs against another piece. Check them lines people. These problems were supposed to have been fixed from MY02+ vehicles, but every time I look in the hood of my MY05, I wonder what the heck they fixed ...

Sorry Witek, wanted to circle, was in a rush. In big picture, it's the inner part of the "L" bend In the upper left-hand corner. This is not the same issue as far's 55. This sprayed forward and inward. If it had sprayed up though, I guess it could have found it's way under the engine cover. I'll look in the AM, thanks. And, unless Bubba works in Tuscaloosa, AL, he's never touched this ...

Mitigating factors ? 1. The brake line will leak first before blowing up. 2. Aren't there 2 brake lines so power braking is not completely lost ?

Which wheel was it on? how can i check for this issue?

Noodles replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Drivers side front. Follow the brake line and fuel line down. Make sure there is proper clearance and they are routed in a way that they can not rub on each other.

Correct. Witek says that only the 8-cyl is affected. Can't remember which yours is. Even so, 50000 of all 8-cyls between '99-'02 the odds are in your favor.
