Hoping someone can give me a suggestion - lots of good information on this board. We want to take a cruise out of Vancouver to San Diego this October but understand if we have a DUI conviction on our record (nearly 5 years ago)we may not be able to get across the border to board the boat. If this is true is there anything that can be done to address the issue? Any good suggestion would...
thanks for the link. It sounds like it is basically up to the perogative of the agent who looks at the paperwork. Some say "go" and some say "no". I meet all the requirements of "a rehab" person and will get the paper work just in case. Wondering if anyone out there has had first hand experience with an issue like this and how it went for them.
Wow, you learn something here every day!! I had no idea that Canada had such stringent regulations regarding entry! It sounds like our Canadian cousins treat a whole bunch of things as felonies which are not a particularly big deal in the U.S. And here's a stupid question, how would Canadian authorities know?? If they scan your passport, does that run a record check?? Or are they ...
They must share information with the US. I have a friend who is a trucker and was denied entry 10 years ago because of some legal troubles he had as a teenager. I also know a guy that had to cross for his work everyday, he worked for a bi-national bridge authority, and after he was denied entry he had to apply for a waiver $200 I think. One thing to be careful of is the first time you ...
But share HOW?? Canada runs a criminal record check as you wait at the border, or they already have criminal records on all Americans?? I find this quite interesting!
is there a difference between DWI and DUI or just different terms based on jurisdiction? i ask because the first time i remember hearing the term DUI was from a good friend of mine who lives on the west coast. and op, if u r planning a cruise out of canada, i wouldn't take the risk and would get the necessary paperwork. last month i went to montreal; just before hitting the road, ...
Sorry, don't know if you're from Canada or not, as I didn't check the IP. However, in the US, there is a major difference between a misdemeanor or a traffic offense, and a felony. Apparently, a lot of things are viewed more seriously in Canada than they are in the US. A DWI or DUI--same thing--is NOT a felony anywhere in the US, unless there are other aggravating factors--prior DUI ...
we went to the Canadian consulate in Seattle to ask for a clarification. We were told we may not even be questioned or we may be required to pay a $175 fee for a waiver at the border and we should have paperwork showing the case closed or we may be denied entry period - it's all up to the discresion of the agent checking us thru. We were hoping to get a waiver but none are available. We...
I know that this post is a little old... But I had to get to the bottom of the question "How". By what I am able to gather, the United States and Canada entered into the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in March 1985 [http://www.oas.org/juridico/mla/en/traites/en_tra ites-mla-can-usa2.html]. This tready allows the Department of Justice and the RCMP to exchange any information [No limit ...
From the other side, Canada to US.... A friend of mine had a DWI here in Canada and was not able to travel to the US with this conviction on his record. He has to request a "pardon" to have it expunged, and it could be denied, (at the control of whoever looks at it, as he could not get any clear indication of what the criteria was for a pardon) in order to travel to the US. My ...

It does work both ways. But I don't believe that the exchange of information was until after 9/11, or at least the late 90's. I was in a bar fight when I was 19, charged with assault but was not convicted. My lawyer told me that everything would be wiped clean and there would be no record since it did not go to trial. Following this I held a US student Visa from 94-97. Five years ago I was going to a Tigers game in Detroit and was...
