Thread: Traveling with senior citizen...transportation concerns

Started 1 year, 11 months ago by IowaHawkgirll
I will be visiting Victoria for three nights in June...traveling via ferry from Vancouver . I will be traveling with my 83 year old mother who needs to walk with a cane and moves slowly. I am flying from Iowa to Vancouver and was thinking of renting a car for 3 days in Vancouver and then taking the ferry to Victoria for 3 days. I know this can be expensive but am concerned about touring the ...

We do have a great bus system here. Having said that, I would still rent a car. Absolutely. I have travelled a lot in the last few years with my 80-year-old Dad, and I can't imagine the extra stress of not having the car at hand when you want it. We've had incidents where we've needed to get him back to the hotel quickly, and the thought of waiting for a bus when he's in that state would NOT ...

My husband is a bus driver and he also agrees with the previous advice. You will have more flexibility and be able to enjoy Victoria more. The buses are quite infrequent on some routes especially on weekends. The advice to take the Pacific Coach Lines bus from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria, and then rent the car when you get here, is excellent. Once you have ...

Above advice of getting the bus from downtown to downtown is great. It will work well. Use the elevator on the ferry to get to and from your bus coach. Butchart Gardens and the Museum will provide a wheelchair, not that your Mother needs it, but I always do that with my mother and she pushes it till she needs to sit for awhile. It's a great strategy for comfort! Have a ...

Thanks for all of the helpful advice. I'm a little unclear on the cost of the Pacific Coast bus versus taking a rental car on the ferry. If I am reading the fare tables correctly, the bus looks like about $44 per person one way and the ferry looks like $13/per person plus $43 for the car one way so taking a car on the ferry looks slightly cheaper. It seems like I can get a lower rental car ...

You haven't factored in the cost of the rental. There are some car companies that will not let you take cars OFF the Island, but maybe the ones on the Mainland won't have that rule for going on. It's no problem getting on the ferry with a car. We thought we were saving you money by getting the bus for that day, but the convenience might well be worth it. Parking is not expensive in ...

VictoriaGardener, Thanks for the offer re: hotel advice. One of our main criteria is separate beds but most hotels seem to offer only twin beds when it comes to a double room. We tentatively have a reservation at the Marriott Inner Harbour which looks like it has full size beds. Do you think this is a good place for us to base our trip? We are staying 3 nights and heading back to the ...

Have you looked at www.royalscot.com? It's high on our list for hotels. I have a few B&Bs that I think are wonderful, too, but maybe not with twin beds. The Mariott is just fine, too. I'm not sure where you park, but probably under the hotel. The Bon Rouge and Pescatore restaurants are somewhat close by, so I'd recommend them. I haven't been to Vista 18 which I think is in the Mariott....

Hi; Just a reminder to bring your mom’s handicapped parking permit, if she has one. Most cities in Canada will honour it. Best Regards
