Dear all
I have a growling/ grinding sound in 3rd and 4 th gear that I makes me nervous. I suspect bad bearings, but am not sure....
When I am in 3rd or 4th gear on my 930 Turbo (1977) and I am at low rev of about 1500 and I am accelerating, I can hear a growling/ grinding sound, in my opinion from the transmission. It is only audible when I accelerate at low revs. At higher revs (and...
..mmm but only in 3rd/ 4th gear? Then it should be in every gear if it is the clutch. The only thing I could think of that could make a sound like that in a clutch would be the clutch release bearing.
But that makes little sense - that bearing is only grinding when under load (that's only the case when pushing the clutch).
The sound in my case is when in gear, not while shifting into ...
A clutch alignment problem would also cause it. Many go straight for the bearing as the culprit but often it lies elsewhere. While acceleration have you tried depressing the clutch quickly without changing gear to see how quickly the noise dissapates?
Hi,
I was playing on the acceleration part only.
Means, while staying in 3rd gear I smootly accelerated - noise appears. I accelerated at higher speeds and noise was not that strong (but could be illusion because the overall noise of the car is much higher at high revs, so that the noise is just relatively low).
When just holding speed, noise is not there.
So it relates ...
Just to add, I have (I think) the exact same situation with my 73.5 915. The sound is only in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. A whining/grinding type sound when trans is under load. It really appears when (say, in 4th or 5th) I let off the gas so there is no torque to the trans, and then gently apply the gas again. It seems to lessen with acceleration, but I suspect it's covered by noise and tension on ...

Hi Ossiblue,
that would be great to let me know your findings. May be it is what Otto wrote - intermediate plate bearings.
Let's see what comes out...
Cheers, cal

Thanks Cal. I didn't want to hijack your thread but felt I had a similar situation. As soon as I ...
Hi Ossiblue, one question: did you have the noise in all gears? For me it is only in 3rd and 4th gear, bt I suppose if it is the pinion it should be noisy in all gears, shouldn't it? cal

Something my mechanic pointed out, in my case (no pun intended), was that the bearing was still firmly fit into the case and...
Good information. I'm going to start on my transmission in a couple weeks and will use this thread for pictures/opinions as I go through it. Ossi/Cal, if you can post pictures of your worn parts it would be appreciated.

In the meantime, I did some searching here and found this posting by Grady Clay that gives very specific information about the pinion bearing change: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/2464186-post10.html

I love it, literally everytime ive got a problem with my car its always on the first page of the technical forum...its wierd, ive got the exact same problem......is this something that need to dealt with asap or what? its a kind of a scraping grumbling noice if i try riding at around fifty or sixty in fifth gear, it happens less in third in fourth, its predominantly loudest fifth
