Thread: Transmission question

Hi, My 1982 500SL seems to have a shifting issue. I can't say for sure because I've never driven another SL. One issue is that, say, when I shift the car into low to start in first gear, the shift to second is so harsh that it'll actually chirp the tires. 1. Normal. 2. Not normal. Could be modulator valve. 3. Kind of normal for any SL they are not monsters off the line. More of an autobahn cruiser. 4. Bad. Slipping, failing? When was the last time the fluid and filter were changed?

Sorry for a lag in the reply, my computer was on the fritz. 2. I believe I had the modulator valve replaced on this car about four years ago. I'd have to look at my maintenance records and can't because I'm at work at the moment. 3. This is normal? I put the car into first yesterday and stepped on it. It didn't really start accelerating at a decent pace until about 2000rpm. It was ...

Check the fluid level and smell the fluid. A burned smell is not good. Either way, take it to a shop.
