Thread: Tranny jack

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by taro
I was thinking about doing the rear seal on my '82 and was in Harbor Freight. They had a tranny jack with an 800lb capacity and one that had a 2000lb capacity. Will the 800lb jack be enough? Thanks, Taro

buying those things that just at that moment fit your needs, you'll have to repeat purchase often. if you can afford the 2k, then 2k it is. if your counting penny's ... AND WE ALL HAVE ... then spend few less and get the 800. my reccommendation if the 2k. i have trailed one of my 2k's ... on that trip , three times i watched guys look over to me and beg me to get mine jack out cause ...

i have just recently replaced my rear main and clutch. i did not have a tanny jack handy so i tied lifting straps around the tranny and hung it from a prybar resting on 2 ammo cans on my floor boards. i was able to shim it with wooden shakes to almost the exact right hight and push it right in. it was much easyer than fussing about with a jack. however if this is something you do often it ...

Lots of people just pull the tranny hump and use a comealong strapped to their roll cage or a board laying across the rollbar and windshield.

I bought a tranny jack for my 40 & it was a waste because of the ackward shape & weight of the trans & transfer. They occupy a lot of floor space & are totally useless for anything else. I tried welding up a saddle for my floor jack & that failed, too. So I just used the floor jack & a cherry picker through the door. Now that my roll cage is in, I may even be able to dispense with the floor ...

Thanks for the feedback all. I have a long history of paying the price for trying to cut corners (so many examples--thankfully mostly in tweaked parts or tools and time versus injury). So with my luck, my fear is that I would end up dropping the tranny on me. With respect to how much I would use it...I've got the rear seal on the 40 and need to replace my clutch and input shaft bearing on ...

Don't laugh. This is what I use. Have done many 4speeds a couple 3 speeds and even a a440 with it. All with the transfercase hanging off the back. A board under the tranny over to the front output shaft help steady it. I've done a couple by myself with that piece of crap and it went just fine. It's all about how you keep it balanced. Air ratchet helps in lowering and raising.

I've used my motorcycle jack without any issues. Mind you, both of my LC's are lifted so lifting and dropping the trans, and pulling it out form under them is not a problem. I remove the handle and away I go.

Steamer, thanks for the advice. With that setup, how did you get the tranny out from under the vehicle? On my pathfinder, I'm needing to replace a clutch and replace a bearing in the tranny. Thanks, Taro

Oops! Wasn't thinking. I'm SOA with 39.5x15s. I just dropped it onto a low dolly and rolled it out. You could put the vehicle up on jack stands and use the same set up. In stead of moving the vehicle you can bump the pipe stands (not the jack stands) close to the floor and inch them along. If you're not on hard ground you can lay down some plywood.
