A teenage friend at the stables where I board is having an issue getting her young mare to load in a trailer.
Anyways, here is the nitty gritty:
mare is 4 yrs old, nutritionally deprived her 3 yr old year, but gaining weight now with new owners.
owner is 14 yrs old, dad USED to ride a long time ago, mom doesn't know a thing about horses
mare has been in "season" for over 7 ...
Wow, I've never had one go six days before. I think the biggest mistake they are making is using force at all. The mare needs to be completely left alone,
food left in the trailer (just basic hay). I would place the food at the back for one or two days until she was relaxed eating there, then to the middle, and
then to the front. I would not try to coax or force the mare. Let it be her decision. ...
If the mare truly is not eating and hasn't for six days, then she needs to be reintroduced to food NOW. There's no excuse for six days without food.
Sometimes that trick works and sometimes it doesn't. Some horses just will NOT load into a straight load trailer. If friend has gotten said horse into a
stock trailer with minimal issues, then I suggest they realize that the mare really has an ...
There are also a lot of things you can do outside of the trailer to help prepare a horse for entering a trailer.
When I have had problems loading horses, I make sure they have some basic concepts on the ground. FORWARD is a big one. If my big mare doesn't want to get
in the trailer and starts to fight me, if I take her away from the trailer, she nearly always needs a reminder of forward. That...
She needs food NOW! Introduce it slowly-- only a handful at a time for the next day or two. Water, of course, should always be available. She's not had
food in six days and they think this is OK??? Has she had water? Sorry, but if this filly hasn't had food because of this in six days, these owners are
idiots and shouldn't have a horse...
Were they putting it in the front of the trailer or ...
It all start with manners on the ground. This girl needs someone to help
her with ground work and some basic respect issues first before she goes
near the trailer. And while grain is a great bribe/reward sometimes, she is
starving her horse by leaving food only in the trailer. Are you in a
position to help this girl? Will she take your advice?
Thanks so much for your responses!
The mare snatched some hay from the horse next to her 2 days ago. Aside from that she's gotten handfuls of hay & grain daily as bribes to get her in
the trailer. Mare is a SMART cookie and has everyone's number for sure!
Timing and intuition are severly lacking, as several of you mentioned.
Flat out suggestions are not met so well. Yesterday, ...

You CAN force a horse into a trailer but it will never be reliable and safe. If she figures it out for herself she will be fairly relaxed throughout the
process and not associate the loading/unloading with people, force, pain, fear, anxiety, ect.
It is sooo sad that getting her unloaded for one trail ride took precedence over this mare's training and security...
Stock trailers are always best for this, but not everyone has one...so.... Put the feed in the very end (the open end) of the trailer. If she won't eat it there, put it right outside the trailer. And gradually move it inch by inch further into the trailer. This is one of those things that takes time. Another trick is to load another horse into the trailer first, then see if she'll load.

It sounds like they have successfully convinced the mare that the trailer is a VERY BAD PLACE to be avoided at all costs and now they are going to have to back off, feed the mare, and think about their plan to change that perception.
