Thread: Too hot a load ya think ??

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Etexhunter
(This might be old, sent to me thru email) A guy came into the Police Department the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new load and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. Looks like his hot loads were too hot.

Got this email last month. I get that got attention for sure. He is lucky he is alive, and that the top strap didn't take his head off.

Timing failure maybe? Not that smart on handguns, but it looks like the cyl is not aligned with the chamber. Don't know how that would cook off the other rounds though. Woooh. Lucky guy.

I bet there was a barrel obstruction from an earlier load. Assuming he didn't screw up and use the wrong powder, I don't think you could stuff enough H110 or 2400 in a case to cause that much pressure. Those are two of the more popular 44Mag powders. I used to run a compressed load of 110 under a 300 grain XTP in my Super Blackhawk all the time.

More than likely a case full of Bullseye that he thought was H110.
