Thread: Tons of slop in the rear sight base of my "new" Springfield 1903 from CMP

It takes several turns of the windage knob for the rear sight to even start moving, and there's so much slop I can literally take my finger and push the sight ...

Mine has the same problen..& from what i've heard so do many others. I believe its from the windage pinion being worn. I imagine it can be replaced.

You rushed restoration of a classic firearm to an 8 hour time span? For shame just kidding, congrats! lots of sources for parts, take it down and analyse the problem first. Mine is a 1918, and no problem with windage. Although you can push hard and it seems weak, that is the nature of the beast. but the adjuster works and it shoots fine. hoo raah

If you adjust the sight all of the way away from the knob, you should be able to disengage the pinion from the screw and lift the rear sight off. The screw portion is held in place by spring pressure and can also easily be removed. Then, you'll be able to see what part is worn (almost surely...
