Tokyo to Takayama
Hi all ,
I'm thinking about reducing my time spent in Tokyo by one night and spending it elsewhere , somewhere en route to Takayama.
Can anyone reccommend a good overnight stop between Tokyo and Takayama please ?
Thanks

Even though taking sand baths is an experience, traveling to Beppu (it's closer than Kagoshima) in a day or two just for that purpose sounds too hectic.
Model schedules in your time frame:
23/Sep Hiroshima 7:58 -> 10:34 Beppu with one transfer in-between
24/Sep Beppu 7:23 -> 14:34 Odawara (gateway to Hakone) with two transfers in-between
It looks like you can do little or nothing in Hakone...
I don't have a blog.
I stay with old friends when in Tokyo.
There are quite a few castles in Japan. It is definitely worth seeing one or two but which one's will depend upon where you are planning to be. There are several websites that focus on Japanese castles so try google. Also look at which ones might be Unesco World Heritage sites.

Yading and beyond
I just visited Yading National Park in Sichuan and walked from there to Shangri-La County in Yunnan from where I caught public transport back to Shangri-La / Zhongdian

Thanks for the advice. Otherwise does this seem sort of ok? Any places I should add or skip, spend more or less time in? It seems (based on other postings) that most people do this journey in 2 weeks instead of 3. I'm looking for a happy medium between racing around and dawdling.
Hanzhong (Shaanxi province)
Hello everybody,
I have two questions about Hanzhong in Shaanxi province:
a) I know there are pretty comfortable express busses from Xian to Hanzhong. Does anybody know where in Hanzhong these busses arrive? Do all busses from Xian go...
Looking at your question again, Hyperdia should tell you if these are JR trains. They should be and thus the pass should cover them.
It might help if you spelled out how many days you plan to spend in each place but only you can determine whether it is too rushed - do you like changing locations every 2-3 nights? How long are the train rides?

Usually tourists are overcharged more than the locals. Do not expect Chinese people to admit the truth. They are far from being honest.
I also remember that I had to pay some tax when my bus passed through a bridge going into a certain district or in another case, when it crossed a bridge whereas the other people had to pay nothing.
In your case, I won't be surprised if the extra fee you had ...
If you go to Hong Kong, and then overland through China to Vietnam, you will need a double entry China visa. For Qu (2) - I did that route going north last year, but no reason why you can't do it going south. On your itinerary it would make more sense going south. Visa length - either you will need to get a long visa - 60 days, or you will need to extend it when in China, or you will have to exit China (to HK) and then re-enter to start a...
Why not call the Mongolian embassy in Beijing so you can find out for certain? It was reportedly closed for the H1N1 influenza but the peak of that epidemic has passed. Ruth
You will need a tour guide to enter any "religious sites", e.g. the Potala, Drepung (especially Drepung!!), Sera, Jokhang etc... some can be quite easy to go without any tour guide, but better not to go to the Drepung Monastery without one...
Obviously there's no advantage to the average expat, other than the fact the site is in English (though that's no reason to pay the extra charge of over RMB100. However, for tourists who want to guarantee tickets, and don't want to mess around with the whole system upon arrival, an extra $13-20 probably isn't a big deal. If you aren't under a time crunch, I'd still think it best to buy tickets upon arrival, or...
Lucky you found a guy who managed to smuggle his in, OP. Must have been terrible walking around Chengdu for two whole days without a guide book. How did you survive? I feel for you.
You can walk around Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City is closed when you arrive. But you have time to have a dinner at Quanjude(Beijing Duck). Then you can walk round Chang'an street and take a taxi to Wangfujing. Then go to your hotel.
