Thread: To be a SAHW or not.

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by BlueBlueBird
I have a BS in elementary education and I have been teaching for a while. I have been having a lot of panic attacks lately because of the stress of my job. Our monthly expenses are around 1500 a month. Right know we bring home about 60k a year. If I quit my job and stayed home my husband would bring home about 30k a year. We have about  a year and half of living expenses saved. My husband has ...

What is causing all this stress? Normally, I would be inclined to say that panic attacks mean a certain type of personality, in most cases.  Not all personalities are suited for all types of jobs.  With your kind of job... one has to like it in order to be good at it.  My humble opinion.  Kids pick up on these things intuitively.

Living on 30K a year creates a whole nuther set of stressors.   If you don't want to teach full time, why not be a substitute teacher, for example?

I taught high school Spanish in the inner city for 7 years before having my daughter and staying home with her (she is now 2).  It was an extremely stressful job at times - I had fights in my classroom, gangster students who would be arrested at school, even a shooting on my campus my last year of teaching.  But, I knew that not all schools would be so stressful.  Is there any way you would ...

Are you saying you don't want to work as a teacher or you don't want to work at all?  Teaching might not be for you, it wasn't for me. If you don't want to work at all, you might be dealing with a much  bigger problem than panic attacks.  I have a sister who has agoraphobia and a host of other mental disorders, she won't go any further than the mailbox by herself.

What if it's not job-related stress, but something to do with you?  I think you need to get some counselling or other treatment.  What happens when you have kids to take care of at home and you start having panic attacks there?  Can't exactly quit the job of mom.  I think you should do something to discover and address the root cause of this.  Clearly there are people doing the same job, with ...

I have a cousin who had debilitating panic attacks, so I have some idea of how terrible they are.  Honestly, if you just can't take it anymore, and your husband is supportive, I would probably quit (although perhaps you could ask for a leave of absence for a semester?) as you work through these issues and discover what is causing them and how to deal with it.   I would NOT just quit and ...

I would agree with WCP - whatever you decide to do career-wise (maybe the job is right for you, maybe it isn't), you need to figure out what medical problem is causing the panic attacks.  I don't think it's normal to be having panic attacks simply because of job stress, and chances are that leaving your job won't automatically fix the problem. Your husband sounds like a supportive guy...good ...

Instead of quitting your job, why don't you seek treatment?  I take Buspirone and Lorazepam/Ativan for panic attacks. I would NOT just quit and stay home, because who knows what is causing these attacks and if they might crop up at home as well?  Better to see a counselor or someone who can help you deal with them. True.  I had one "trigger" for my panic attacks at one point.  Then the panic...

He says it is not worth me being hospitalized again. I have been having a lot of panic attacks lately Leave this job. Maybe not become a SAHW (since $30,000 would be pushing it with income/outgo), but for your health and sanity (and your husband's). Is it the job specifically? The district? Anything else you could do as you transition to a new career (substitute)? Would your living ...

What about changing schools or working in the school office or the admin office or something like that? Is it working in general or just this particular gig?

Its usually less money, but have you considered teaching at a private school with religous affiliation?? As my mom would say, the cover charge helps keep the riff-raff out.

I am having my meds adjusted. My Dr. just add another medicine and I am working on the dosage. It will take about a month to get that part right. Meds are not the solution to life's problems.? They may help you get on your feet but you really need to deal with the issues and tackle them head on.?

You said a mouth full when you said they go home. Ours stay in the classroom. They get a good talking to and go back to an class We have an in-house suspension program for minor infractions and students are sent home for more major issues. We have a positive behavior plan program with monthly rewards for students who follow the rules.? ?We have a school-wide discipline program and policies are in place for dealing with unruly students. I am a teacher. ? Do not get special education certification thinking that it is somehow "easier."? Yes, the student/teacher ratio is lower.? But there is even more stress.? In addition to learning disabilities, you deal with behavioral disorders.? Parents are eager to sue to get their "rights."? The paperwork load is incredible. ? You need to consider community college teaching or another career.? A lot depends on WHY you...

Is there a counseling component to all this, or are you just popping pills?? Meds might help you in the short term, but long term you're going to have to deal with the issues that are triggering a completely irrational response to a normal situation.

BlueBlueBird - I would look for another position and leave this job when you have secured another job.? You can work part-time somewhere like at a learning center or look into a different field.? If you are already seeing a counselor and feel that it would be best for you to leave, then you should.? My husband has OCD issues (with recurring thoughts that he can't seem to filter out), and takes seroquel at night and paxil during the day.?...

The job may be causing her stress, but it's not like panic attacks are normal manifestations of stress that everyone gets when they've got a tough job.? They're a medical problem that can be serious.? Maybe she does need to quit teaching, but I think this is a problem that goes beyond her career. Best of luck.

Again, I don't mean to be critical. Either you're a new teacher who is still learning or sadly, teaching might not be for you. Unless you teach in a school with the same kind of environment - where "The subs choose not to sub at our school that much" I'd have to say you have no right to criticize. I'll be the first one to talk about classroom management, I've seen both bad and good (I have a master's in...

I have had panic attacks.? They almost always occur when I'm under a great deal of stress.? The easiest way for me to deal with them is to get by myself, deep breath and wait it out.? At my current job I haven't had a single panic attack.? At another one, I was having them frequently.? I'm under about the same amount of stress, but the environment is entirely different.? I have a little more privacy and the ability to take a...
