I'm just curious,
If Heath Ledger had been Alexander instead of Colin Farrell would you have hated this film any less?
Frankly, I hear all this (unfair) criticism of Farrell's performance, so I'd like to know if Heath Ledger (who was considered for the role before Farrell appeared) had been Alexander instead.
Or hell, what if Tom Cruise had been Alexander back when Stone was preparing ...
I thought Farrell did a great job, and I loved the movie.
I would have loved to see the Baz Luhrmann film with Leo DiCaprio as Alexander and Nicole Kidman as Olympias. It got cancelled after Alexander flopped.

To make it clear, I've been defending Alexander here for months and I can't understand just what ruined it for people.
Glad to know someone else loves it. Did you see the Final Cut by any chance? That is truly the movie to watch.
but frankly, Baz Luhrman is quite overrated, and Nicole Kidman as Olympias is just too much, like Di Caprio as Alex. No offence to DiCaprio, he's one of the best ...
The movie suffers from slow narration... there's too much "boredom" between interesting war sequences. It may very well be because Alexander, after all, was mainly a great thinker, not just warrior, so if you want to portray him well, you have to split the movie between war scenes and "thinking" in the same ratio that wars and thinking were split in his life.
But anyway, that's the result -- ...
I cant understand it either, i thought this was a great epic film. Historically very accurate and entertaining if your into this genre. If you watch the final cut (the best version by far), it will explain a lot, even more if you listen to the directors commentary. This movie was meant to be long and drawn out, thats the movie Oliver Stone wanted to make originally but the studio made him cut the...
Ah see when it comes to Angelina Jolie in the movie I agree with the criticism. Her scenes with Farrell were too over the top, and made Farrell look bad compared to scenes with his dad or his friends or even his enemies.
But yeah, A. Revisited is a cinematic triumph in terms of cinematography and costumes. The acting varies from Jolie to the good ones like Kilmer or Hopkins or Leto. And of ...
I liked the movie but was dissapointed to not see a few of Alexander's battles:
Taking and burning of Persepolis
Siege warfare against the Indo-Iranian city-kingdoms "Afghan campaign"]of the Pamirs
Guerilla warfare and rivalry against the Scythian leader Spitamenes
His confrontation with the Greeks who were exiled to Persia after their aid in helping burning down of Athens by the Persians...
Yes to both but really it was doomed to fail because of the rancid script.
The film was horrible beyond words. I'm sure Stone bitterly regrets ever being involved in the project.
You're my wife now.
A lot of directors take liberties when making films and stretch the truth or leave out the truth. Even though there are some truths in this movie (There really was an Alexander the Great), the liberties Stone took and the inaccuracies were immense.
Alexander was truly was of the greatest Conquerors of human history, and this movie did not bring out some of his greatest battles or the ...

Actually, Alexander is probably best known today for his sexuality. His "brilliant mind" only produced ideas (wear persian clothes, introduce proskynesis) that didn't work and made him the most hated king in Macedonian history. Ultimately, Stone's greatest mistake was probably that he didn't make the film entirely about Alexander's sexuality. A lot of people who saw this film seem to have been confused by...

Just saw Final cut - it was my second watch - first was five years ago in 2004. And I love it so much. Because of the authentic spirit of Hellenic culture. Because it's not stupid entertainment like Gladiator or Troy. Yeah the theme is too big even for Stone but he did his best. And was very close to triumph. I might add Farrell really miscast cause a lot actors could do more. To play Alexander we need great personality, someone like...
