I know from being on here that after xmas the rescues get loads of dogs come in, also that rescues can only do so much so i was wondering is there anything us joe public can do to help out? Id love to donate money to them but i cant afford to, id love to transport but i cant drive, id love to foster but i know i couldn't part with them after so if i am unable to do any of them others out ...
Prevention is better than cure. Discourage people getting puppies on a whim at Christmas time, particularly for someone else as a present. Otherwise, if it has worked well, what about encouraging people to sign up for temporary adoption of a dog in kennels, at christmas (I haven't followed how well this has worked either in boosting adoption rates or in helping to socialise and habituate ...

I know somebody who got a rescue dog on a whim! Is that a bad thing?! They went to a rescue to adopt a rabbit, but walked past the small dog run and fell in love. They'd thought they couldn't have a dog because they both worked full time but it was one of those flexible rule things - the dog was elderly and my friend could get home at lunchtime so they were allowed to have him.
I think there needs to be more advertising, to get the dogs out of rescue that are there already. More information out there for those who dont know their are rescues, even those on their door steps. I know it sounds strange to us that people dont know, but unless youv looked you dont know its there. The other thing, is to show how dogs can be a joy at Christmas, and not a burden, ...
This is just my opinon but rescues need to rethink there policy on not homing dogs with un-neutered or un-spayed dogs. When we lost Jazz we were devastated, after about 3 months we both felt ready to start looking for another rescue. We went to one rescue, filled in the required paperwork who turned us down because Harvey isn't neutered. Now, at the end of the day, we are not going to breed ...
You could also bare in mind any unwanted Christmas pressies you dont particulary want (like the reindeer jumper my nan gets me every year) and donate it to rescues for tombolas or to sell in thier shops if they have one. Or even Swap Shop on here. Im sure every penny counts for rescues this time of year. But even used towels, bedding you dont need any more can be used by rescues for the influx ...

Perhaps we should all write to the 'letters' page of our local newspapers pointing out the plight of rescues right now and telling people about the number of wonderful dogs (and puppies) looking for homes. Many people aren't aware so it's up to people like us who know the situation to inform the rest of the population. Who knows, it may be of interest to some of their editors and could get ...

QUOTE(Barneys Dad @ 9th Nov 2009, 7:31 pm) Please dont turn yet another thread into a dig at how rescues are run. There have been enough of those recently. They all have their own reasons for their policies, and you can always go to another rescue that doesnt have the same policies In response to the op/s question, one thing we are trying to do at the moment is get handbills up in as ...
Some really good ideas on here I am limited on what i can do to help as i have agoraphobia and social phobia so i have problems with talking to people face to face and over the phone which is why i thought maybe i could help get the rescues names out there and maybe donate my facebook status to a different dog every day or pop a photo with info in my window of a hard to home dog once a week, i live opposite a very busy shop and dog walkers go...

Many volunteers are unable to support rescues in a financial capacity but do there bit with homechecking or perhaps helping with admin. putting up posters, answering the phones, acting as a collection point for donations of blankets and food. I doubt there are many that would turn you away and with the use of internet then the distance you live from the rescue or rescues of your choice should not be a problem. We are always on the look out...
