Not joining means you don't feel imprisoned and you aren't subjected to ritual humiliation and possibly death. However, joining either means you get the chance to live in closed quarters with lots of burly, sexually frustrated musclemen with an inexhaustible supply of gun oil. Your call. Great retirement benifits, pay for school for ya, basically pay for everything for 4+ years. I've never been in the army or marines, but I know its a very unique lifestyle.
