Thread: The future for rural UK?

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by PhilT1808
Hi - I live in a fairly rural village location about 2 miles from the local telephone exchange. We currently receive broadband from BT at around 1.4 Mbs. What do you think the future will be for rural locations? Are we ever likely to get 'superfast' broadband or fibre optic? Or is this just not cost effective?

It is likely those of us in rural or semi-rural areas will always lag behind the towns and cities. It's definitely down to costs here in the UK because our government still expects the broadband companies to pick up most of the costs. In other countries governments pay for the upgrades in infrastructure (like S Korea) but here that isn't the case. The UK government are ...

Quote: The UK government are looking into it but it is still likely they wont cover the full costs, preferring a public/private mix of funding so whether it will make a lot of difference is open for debate. I agree - can't see the government investing in this given the state of the economy at the moment. It's so frustrating ...

The proposed 50p per month tax on landlines is supposedly to be used to subsidise the provision of superfast broadband in rural areas.

A 50p per month tax on top of the tax we already pay in VAT for having a landline? I'm sure that willl be a popular Labour vote winner...

The division between urban and rural areas when it comes to broadband is very sudden. As you go further out of a town, it becomes more and more rural (depending on what surrounds the town, of course!). As such, you get fewer shops and other services (such as buses) the further out you go. With broadband though, it's a sudden drop. The exchange in my local town (and it's a ...

Quote: The increase is not going to be night and day for someone starting on 1.4mbit with ADSL. The move to ADSL2+ (which is what will happen) will likely give you around 3-4mbit sadly. To be honest, any increase in speed would be welcome. Going from 1.4 to 3-4 mbs would mean we can actually use on demand services. The BT vision box we have has not been used since we got it free last year...
