Hi all,
I've been reading the topics about L4D (1&2) and most of people said that it has no story, and also that Action FPS aren't meant to have storytelling.
Actually, guys at Valve went more subtle about it and I discovered through a very interesting post on the steam forum that it requires a bit of research and observation of the game's environment.
Thanks to the user KeRupTion:

Thanks for posting this - very interesting. I always like to take note of the little details, and in a way stripping back the narrative makes this more interesting and at the same time keeps things fast-paced. Overall though, I wish they'd left in the story and made it a proper, persistent, savegame-based Gears-style story mode, versus etc still being available on the campaign maps.
I think it is a cop out... I saw all the details but creating an environment rich with detail does not replace narrative... They dropped the ball in the story dept. which is one of my few complaints.

Wow..Really?... This is a tired position to take(not to mention a free pass)... I can give you a laundry list of fps games that actually have a story...

The terms FPS and RPG do not involve storytelling, they are not even "genre", an RPG can work as an FPS (Deus Ex, System Shock, Fallout 3, Morrowind, ...
Hey, how much story do the average FPS online multi-player games have? The single player offline versions have a lot of RPG aspects, sure. Look at Half-Life and HL2. Are there any online versions of those games? And, I don't think that Counterstrike or Day of Defeat or Deathmatch or Team Fortress have a lot of story, yet they all sprang up from HL and HL2. Left 4 Dead was meant to be an online ...
Is it deliberate?
Who's talking about "forcing" L4D to have storytelling? It's called layering and fan service, lad.
Just read Chet Faliszek interviews (by the way he is the L4D's writer) or take a look at the today's GT's interview at valve if you want to have a serious point.
My point is that L4D isn't empty of any storytelling, it doesn't mean that it's the Citizen Kane of ...
Well, yes, the story is more subtle in l4d. But this is not a game that was made for storytelling. This was a game for more multiplayer action. Thats why it doesn't have story. Imagine playing a Versus Game with cutscenes.
Sorry guys, but the point of this topic ain't about L4D having a "story" or not, but discuss whoever has any interesting insights. This may me applied for the next game.
Anyway no game is made "for storytelling". I'll stop argue at this point, this is not a worthy debate. The game is good, that's what matters (this is my opinion) and these underlying "story nuggets" are even more enjoyable....
VALVe posted this on their MySpace bulletin. It's the announcement for the DLC2 being released for L4D. What you have been waiting for, L4D content! LEFT 4 DEAD CRASH COURSE AVAILABLE SEPT 29 - L4D1 DLC2 Expands Award-Winning Game September 23, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced that...
I can't believe I'm reading this kind of post again, who cares about how you like the game in this thread? this is a discussion about the background of L4D not a debate. Some L4D signs . Any insight on Crash Course?, I haven't been through it enough yet.
The opening was actually just to introduce you to the elements in the game. Had the Smoker, Hunter, Tank, Witch, and Boomer Puke. Showed pipe bomb, and the car alarms. That did not have much story in it. However, there is a new level called Crash Course that is right after the story in No Mercy. Apparently, the helicopter crashes and they are stranded.

so...... open a new thread to talk about the lack of a story in left 4 dead rather then post it in the thread about the story in left 4 dead? I am sure the mods would love that.
For some reason, i always thought that each campain was a different story...basicly in a different senario of them escaping. but really, i think its up to the fan to interperate the story...or stories if you will, although that is completely just my opinion.
In regards to the story, or lack there of, in L4D, I personally prefer it the way it is. Seems more realistic. This is a game about survivors trying to continue surviving. To me not having any knowledge about what caused the outbreak puts you more into the shoes of the characters. These are just four everyday people. They aren't trying to to determine what caused the outbreak and they aren't trying to stop it. They are just trying to...
