Thread: The Springfield 1903

Why do you think The USA didn't develop a carbine version of this weapon? Granted it was shorter and lighter than the Infantry rifles of the time, But The USA had an active mounted cavalry at the time of development, and up until WWll, plus artillery units have been traditionally armed with carbines. I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney, than driving with Ted Kennedy

I would assume some sort of technical impass as it was an excellent rifle.

The M1903 was short enough to be both carbine and infantry rifle, like the SMLE or the Kar98k. This was a conscious and deliberate design choice.
