The lighting, the camera angles, the music, Tony's accent, Aj's munchkin looking ass, Carmela not being a super bitch to Tony for once, Meadow telling Christuffer to ''Blow Me'', Adriana not looking like a skank, etc etc.
The lighting was a bit more dramatic than the rest of the series, and they made one bad music choice, but I didn't see much of a difference that dramatic of a difference. Gandolfini hadn't honed in on his normal accent yet because they weren't sure if it would get picked up. He probably went to work on it a lot more when the show got picked up. AJ was like, 12, so of course he's gonna look a ...
Tony has a different robe too. Father Phil Intintola and Irina Peltsin are played by different actors. Dick Barone is part of the group, but then suddenly disappears after the episode. I hate "The Pilot" as well as pretty much every episode in Season 1. The only episodes I like from Season 1 are:
1. "College"
2. "The Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti"
3. "Boca"
4. "Nobody Knows Anything"
5....
The first few episodes kind of looked like a NY independent film. I guess they were going for a gritty look, but it's weird when you watch them now.
I'M AGAINST IT.
I am not one to get hooked easily on a series, and I was hooked after the first episode! Season I was not the BEST, but it was enough to get me involved, and to start caring about the characters!
I think it is only weird to people who didn't see that as their first episode. To me that's my all time favorite episode because it was the one that started it all it's a classic. I have watched it so many times that it is natural to me and I have watched the character and the show progress and change as it went longer.
As far as pilots go, the sopranos had a pretty good one.
Think of the greatest tv shows of all time and where they started.
The simpsons? Seinfeld? I can't recall anything superb about the first time I saw them.
Inconsistencies are run of the mill when you look back at pilots.
It's always interesting to wonder what sort of direction the show would have taken had Nancy Merchand not died and forced the writers to kill off Livia. She was such a huge part of the show from the very start. I agree. I also think she was the best character on the show (not my favorite character, though). I've watched a lot of interviews with David Chase, and from what I gather, he seems to believe that the three main characters...
Exactly Boogie. The scene was obviously in front of some suburban office building. A lot different than beat down happening in some tight-knit urban neighborhood or small blue-collar town.
"As far as "realistic" goes- there's nothing remotely realistic about a powerful capo in 1999 driving on a sidewalk in broad daylight to hit a guy with a car and then beat him in front of an office building and loads of people." No, I know, I just meant the look. I'M AGAINST IT.
If you hit someone with a car after chasing them on a walkway in front of a dozen or so witnesses, then beat the person on the ground after the fact, it's out of the victims hands as to whether or not he/she wants to press charges at that point. That's aggravated assult (at the least), not simple battery. We buried him on a hill....overlookin' a little river, with pinecones all around.
