Thread: The New James T. Kirk: Now With 'Instant Gratification'!

anyone else a bit sickened by the fact that old kirk had to work his way up, and earn everything he got, where as this new kirk is on a starship for about 5 minutes and becomes a captain?
Strangely enough, I didn't get that from TOS or from the new movie. I never saw "old Kirk" work for anything, and "new Kirk" was on a starship for a bit longer than "5 minutes," and was hardly "given" anything.

it was established that kirk spent years climbing his way up the ranks. this new guy was just in the right place at the right time, and worked for none of it. kindly dont use quotes when i never once used the word given.
Old Kirk spent YEARS gaining rank? The dude was Captain by the age of 29 when most captains probably didnt get that rank until at LEAST mid 30s.
"I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally."
and you say this based on what, exactly? even if thats true, he didn't jump over every single rank between cadet and captain, just because he was so naturally awesome. it had been established that he was a lieutenant, and an ensign, and everything else he'd have to be in order to EARN being a captain.
look it up, ask any trekkie and they will be able to tell you he was the youngest captain in star fleet at the age of 29
"I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally."
The Prime Kirk had to work up through the ranks, BUT it still only took him a few years to get to Captain, probably 10 or so years less than the average Starfleet officer. He was the youngest Captain, in his late 20s when he gained that rank, and the next youngest even offered the rank was Riker, in his early 30s. The reason it even took THAT long for Kirk to raise through the ranks was likely ...
thank you for proving my point brch, i will admit it was a bit odd even to me he got to captain but, it is not out of line with the established character

actually the source i checked said he was 31. but all of this is beside the point, as neither age was ever established in the show was it? according to gene rodenberry himself, the only thing that was canon were the tv shows and movies. but again, it still doesnt excuse the...
Didn't in the TNG episode Conspiracy, Picard mentions a woman captain who achieved the rank faster than anyone else?
The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
well since im insisting that its a TV SHOW and MOVIE SERIES, yes i know it isnt real. why don't you stop trying to be the insult guy aj, your not very good at it. try being the nice guy, it might work for you.
I have no problem if they change canon to make more sense. But not if it makes less sense. "I have the higher ground" "what's that supposed to mean?"
I'd buy it if the sequence would have had him tweaking the system enough to save the Maru in the nick of time (or being able to disable/destroy all enemy ships by the smallest of margins, and then have Pine Kirk act all smug after it was over - with a final shot of the 'administrators' of the test scratching their heads over it. Had they then chosen to later "discover" after extensive testing that Pine Kirk...

I could be wrong, but I think the fastest someone obtained command of a ship was when 12 year old Midshipman David Farragut was placed in command of one of the prizes USS Essex captured during the War of 1812. Granted, the Navy didn't have as many ranks to skip back then. In today's U.S. military, at the age Kirk became a captain, most officers would be a year away from when the could be considered for promotion to lieutenant...
As I asked, do you think he tried to do it covertly and simply got caught or did you assume starfleet didnt know he had cheated and thats why he got a commendation? The former. That would take into account Kirk's obvious cunning that is displayed throughout TOS and in the first 7 films. I saw none of that intelligence behind what Kirk did in ST09. The actions in the film might very well govern "Pine Kirk" but they...
"I saw none of that intelligence behind what Kirk did in ST09. The actions in the film might very well govern "Pine Kirk" but they don't conform to what we'd should have expected from "Shatner Kirk." As explained before, no one knows how prime Kirk beat the Kobayashi Maru test nor his state of mind at the time. This Kirk probably was giving the middle finger to the testers (the test...
This one is juvenile delinquent, smug/smart-ass/know-it-all, "Instant Gratification" Kirk. The perfect Captain Punk for our lowered-standard times... Where as Shatner's Kirk, well... This one is middle aged, smug/smart-ass/know-it-all, "Instant Gratification" Kirk. The perfect Captain Punk for our lowered-standard times... Quite correct.
Well, you're just acting like the tv show is some sacred entity, that can not be touched. I don't know if I'm unhappy because I'm not free, or if I'm not free because I'm unhappy.
"All the crew are younger than they were in TOS. Sign of the times, I guess. If you don't get it, just take a look around you in 2009. ... Just look at what the young kids are doing - my seven year old daughter does stuff on this computer I don't fully understand" that's an excellent point! :)
