Thread: The Greatest-ever One-litre Special Saloon /Group 5 Anglia Driver

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by Clive Brown
Guys, I've been looking at various 'Greatest Ever' threads, and what has become obvious is that if the net is spread too wide, it is an impossible task. So here is a much easier challenge for you. I can think of a number of possible candidates, most of whom are thankfully still with us, so be critical, but be nice, else you could end up with a length of proprietary curtain rail inserted ...

Ginger Marshal's Reliant Kitten with it's Imp/Mini hybrid power plant and later in the 90's Simon Knighton's Lancia Stratos with the bike engine . Both in my view fantasticly engineered 1 litre cars.

Clive, Is your reference to curtain rails a veiled hint about a certain anglia driver sponsored by SWISH (didn't they make curtain rails??) I seem to remember Alan Peer was handy as was Laurie Hickman,Roger Williamson must rank highly, then Boley Pittard, Les Nash, etc. Not sure what group 5 encompasses. A few names for starters, apaogies for the many not mentioned.

Clive Brown replied 2 months, 2 weeks ago
John, you've picked up my reference to curtain rail exactly, as it was Gerry Taylor, a regular and valued contributor to this Forum, that got me thinking about this in the first place! John MacDonald, Rupert, and I'm not sure that John Fitzpatrick didn't drive the Group 5 (pre-Group 2 era BSCC) Broadspeed cars. Anita Taylor? At Lydden, Mike Scott?

Definately Scotty,Although now he has turned to single seaters at Lydden with a Spead, trying to impress his son who is now also racing with an old formula Renault. Yes ,Anita Taylor must rate highly in The Anglia camp.

Best looking? Anita Taylor (and more than competent behind the wheel)

Nick Britain in 'Green Bean' must be up there with the best.

I'd suggested Rupert earlier, in post #28. I'm pretty sure that he had two Anglias, both black, one a tin car and the other a spaceframe job. As I recall, one of his fellow competitors at the time suggested that most of the space in the latter car was between the driver's ears; now, who might that rude fellow have been? A clue; it wasn't Liane Engeman or Anita Taylor!

Thanks for that - a nice bit of background information, I was racing at Rufforth in March, 1967 when the EART Anglias ventured north for perhaps the only time, the drivers being Roger Taylor (1800cc) and Brian Keen (1300cc). My brother Chris came 11th in this race in a 1600 TC Anglia and beaten by Roger, who won,and Brian Keen who came 7th. As an aside, Tom Walkinshaw was in the same race in a Lotus Cortina and Brian Robinson in one of the...

Hi Gerry, I too offered the car to Donington and found it surprising that with their interest in Roger that they weren't interested at the time. I've still got the steering wheel which i'll never sell but cannot truthfully say that you are the reason that I am keeping it! - Have any of you been watching the the ESPN Classic Formula One series over recent weeks. Just knew what was coming when they got to the Dutch Grand Prix last...
