Thread: The Gospel of Judas and Other Gnostic Texts

Started 3 years, 8 months ago by VanGogh
Since the thread on whether Jesus was dark skinned moved up I thought I would start another thread on the recent discovery of a lost book of early Chrisitianity. The Gospel of Judas. For some beginning background information if you don't know the story here's a link: http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_c at=17&art_id=16122&sid=7422721&con_type=1 The Book of ...

Forgot to add the punchline: So to what extent, if any, should the Gospel of Judas and the other Gnostic texts be considered by practicing Christians today? Why or why not?

Thanks Vg. I had heard a little about those new source materials, but, hadn't heard much with any detail. Lots to consider.
Forgot to add the punchline: So to what extent, if any, should the Gospel of Judas and the other Gnostic texts be considered by practicing Christians today? Why or why not?
I don't think seeing Judas as someone helping Jesus requires any fundamental shifts on religiuos beliefs. Basically we should have been able to forgive him either way. But, the claims that god...

The Residents a few years back did a song on this very Judas concept and was the first time I ran across it. However, it is in their later period that I don't find musically interesting.

I always thought that Judas was merely playing his part in that whole drama. That he didn't have a choice but to act as he did. Everything was preordained. I've always thought that the spirit we call God is in everything and is everywhere. That living things are God connected by that spirit. It's the energy that keeps us going. In science they say that energy is neither created nor ...

you believe more than me David... as I see it the spirit only presides where the atmosphere can create life...to me the interest is in the psychology underlying life, in particular human life... the relation to father, the relation to mother, what our body and face and everything concerning reveals about our individual possibilities and the extent of our understanding of this, how ...

Let's say it was an agreement between Jesus and Judas, first, why did Judas recieve money from the high priests for turning in Jesus? It was a decision Judas made out of greed. Yes, it fulfilled the prophecy, but the fact is Juda could have made the decision not to betray Jesus too. It was the same with Peter. Jesus told Peter that before the rooster crows, Peter will have denied him three times,...

To me the real point of the finding of the lost gospels is that it highlights what I've always suspected. The books we know as the Bible were written by men and which ones survived to be come "orthodox" was decided by men.   The political climate at the time that the Gospel of Judas and Thomas and others were in circulation had a big influence on which books were considered heretical. Christians were being routinely...

Good points el8, but once again, I'll go by what I KNOW is true. Why did Judas hang himself if he knew he was just playing a part in fulfilling the prophecy?
