Thread: The Dumb Way Round

Started 1 year, 1 month ago by ThorH
Some are more adventourous than others. Two Norwegians are planning this route: On two of these: 1937 Nimbus As a warm-up, they rode Norway to Singapore on them a couple of years ago. This trip will start in April 2009, they are blogging here . Some in Norwegian, but most is in English. In Ewan's own words: How much of a pussy do you feel now, Charlie?

There is a fine line between hardcore and stupid. These guys have a foot on each side.

They should get really good mileage with that engine (and buns of steel)

Is that a side car in the background?

ThorH replied 1 year, 1 month ago
Yes, they are going with sidecars. There is a fine line between hardcore and stupid. These guys have a foot on each side. Actually, I think they know well what they are doing. And if you read the web, you'll see that they are very well prepared, and that it isn't their first. The choice of bikes may strange at first glance. However, they will not be stuck in Mongolia because of a fried BMS. ...

Yeah I agree, they'll be able to fix everything just about anywhere they go. Did anyone notice that the Nimbus was shaft driven? I always thought BMW was the shaft driven pioneer.

Why do they call their adventure "Dumb"? I don't get it. Am I dumb? Nimbus is a beautifull motorcycle with many happy owners in DK.

coletrain replied 1 year, 1 month ago
No rear suspension on those bikes??? Ouch. Gonna be the busted butt way 'round.

Their trip should be nothing if not interesting. I wonder how the exposed valve gear will cope with dust when they reach the less 'civilized' sections.

My major beef with the LWR video series (and I wrote about it before) is that this series created a fake dream that many newcomers to motorcycling think they can realize just by purchasing the big GS. That behemot is not for beginners. I guess that if the LWR riders popularized a lighter motorcycle I wouldn't protest so much. I can agree with that. However, people who buy motorcycles are responsible for doing their own research and if...

Yep, I agree that maintenance issues shouldn't a huge problem and they appear to know their bikes. Frankly I would be more likely to take an older machine (R80 or R100 in my case) on a trip like this instead of one of these new computerminized fangled farkled can't fix it without a NASA supercomputer jobs. Say what you will about luddites, but low tech carbed machines can be fixed most anyplace.

My good friend just sold his '37 Nimbus, could even be the blue one pictured. Funny thing. They have a dry clutch. There is a small "damn" between the crank case and clutch area. Any steep hills, rough road, and the oil sloshes onto the clutch. Yep, it slips... My friend still has his '39 Nimbus. He chooses to ride his R 1150 RS ...

Long Way Round? Impressed? Hell no. Those dorks had an entire support crew to coddle their navel-staring butts around the world. Good points about the Nimbus. Low-tech means you can fix it. Anyway, what do you call a Norwegian with an IQ of 200? A village.
