Thread: Tell me about your satellite TV please!

Started 1 month ago by folkvictorian
We live in a valley in the middle of nowhere. When digital TV was introduced, we went from 2.5 sometimes-fuzzy local channels to between 2-6 local channels that drive us crazy with their on-again, mostly off-again blippy reception. For the 10,000th time, we received a solicitation from DirectTV in the mail today and it's beginning to get my interest. The ad makes it sound like the greatest ...

We have dish tv. We don't watch alot of tv either, but when we do watch, I want to be able to watch what I want. We're in a rural area. The cable available here was not so great. We get alot more channels with satellite than cable and for a little less money. We've had great service, very rarely has it gone out. We receive some satellite radio stations through dish tv (played through the...

Yes, we have the big 'ole ugly Dish on our roof....talk about ruining the curb appeal of your home. Honestly, my DH lets me have my say for alot around this house, so I had to grant him his wish for his million TV channels. All dish services are pretty local, so this may not happen to you, but they use contractors to install the dishes. Ours was from two states away, and ended doing an ...

Let me just warn you about the cost of it: It might start at $30 a month for the first year, but it will go up substantially after that, unless I'm an unusual situation. I have DirecTV in 2 rooms, and in one of the rooms I have the DVR. I don't subscribe to any premium services. I don't have the bottom-line channel service; I have "Total Choice Plus," the one up that gives you a bit more ...

We have Dish Network. I like it, except for the cost. I find it ridiculous that we pay for tv & still have commercials. I think ours is around $80 a month (we have our local channels through satellite & more than one receiver, which adds to the cost, but I ditto what PammyFav says above about the cost). Anyway, my favorite thing about it is the DVR (like a TiVo) .... I don't watch much tv at ...

We live in a very rural area with no cable service, so we have Dish Network for TV, and also have a dish for high speed internet. Two ugly satellites on our roof! My understanding is that you have to have an unobstructed view toward the satellite-- ours is from the western horizon, so we have to make sure we trim some tree branches that are in that direction. We pay around $60 for TV/...

Like jlc, I live rurally with no cable option. We have DirecTV and it costs us an arm and a leg. I have heard Dish TV is cheaper but I haven't gotten around to seriously checking it out. That said, I am a CNN junkie so I MUST have my TV channels. I record all my TV shows and fly through the commercials. You'd be amazed how quickly you can watch an hour long program without all those ...

We've had Directv for years and years. I used be very happy with every aspect of their service, but they've gotten too big for their own good now and their business practice has suffered for it. As DeeDee mentioned the reception can fade during storms but my biggest problem with them is their customer service, I've heard it's just as bad as the others however, they tend to entrap people into ...

I had the same problem, but solved it by replacing the antenna with one designed for digital signals, which are usually UHF. "Rabbit ears" were designed for VHF (old channels 2-13) and don't work very well for digital reception; an old UHF antenna (usually bow-tie shaped) works better. I also added an signal amplifier (about $25) which plugs into the coaxial cable feed. I rarely get dropouts ...

We had Comcast cable for years. We were pretty happy with them except for a year before we moved, we had major problems which turned out to be a combination of things. Wiring was old, parts on the pole were old. Once everything was fixed it was great. Through this, both of our son's started working for DirecTV. We could have had "free" TV but were so happy with Comcast we never took them up ...

Well, obviously our different experiences go to show just how different areas and preferences are. We had Comcast and we hated it. DH has insisted we keep their internet service with them, but if I had my druthers I'd get rid of that too. I absolutely agree that the DVR box that Directv has now is obnoxious and not what it should or could be. Originally when DVR was first introduced by ...

Ha! Pammyfaye!! That's funny, I didn't have the DTV DVR long enough to figure that out. LOL But you're so right, that's very typical of their new system. The part that drove me nuts is I like to toggle between the two receivers and on Tivo the receivers automatically record what ever channel it's on. The DTV DVR doesn't. That second receiver doesn't function unless you program it to record something so...

BTW, someone mentioned internet through DTV. My son is one of the ones trained for Wild Blue. Big waste of money unless you have no other options. Very slow

We're fairly rural too, but just aren't big on tv. We'll watch a bit more come winter, but we are big outdoor people, including camping, boating, etc. It's been gorgeous here and we've spent most of Friday, Saturday and today outside! We have alot of different interests and thankfully most of those we both enjoy. We've never tried Netflix, but again, we don't see many movies. I was thinking the other day, I...

Oh! You guys are FABULOUS! All your answers are so helpful and it's exactly the kind of information I was looking for! Yes, the price is a big deal, and $60-$70 per month is a lot to swallow, especially since we don't watch a lot of tv. We wouldn't get any special movie channels but there would definitely be additional monthly charges for having more than one tv for when our son is older and wants to watch something different...

Service? OK--forgot to comment on this. Do not label me as a bigot, but here's my problem. Nine out of 10 service-related calls, because the DVR was having issues, were patched through overseas. I spent more of the total time asking the customer service person on the other end to repeat what he was saying because I just couldn't understand him, and I'm usually pretty good at changing how I listen to understand people for whom...

Tina, yep, it's expensive! I still get shocked every time I open the bill. lol. At first it was only about $60/month, but we kept adding and adding and ADDING. We have all the movie channels which we watch quite a bit of. I think we have the high end package. And we also pay for our local stations AND the network stations. I could drop the network stations (ABC east/ABCwest, and so on), but I like it because if one of my shows is...
