I wonder if some kind soul could help me out with tang markings which appear on two P'53's recently acquired; the first is "T.H.2 over 380"
which appears on a second pattern (or should I say "model"?) "Enfield" 1857 musket, and the other being "4.R.S.M.M.324" appearing
on a second pattern "Windsor" 1856 Musket.
Another question relates to the US Windsor. As we know with the later production ...
In the US the governmental year, prior to 1976, ran from July 1 through June 30, so presumably armoury date on a lock plate, ie 1864, would mean the
manufacture was between July 1, 1863 and June 30, 1864. The Windsor contract Enfields might have been dated using the British fiscal year for uniformity with
British arms, or they may have been dated according the calender year, or even the company's...
You might be able to get information from the American Precision Museum which occupies the original R & L armoury in Windsor Vt:

trfuller,
Thanks for your suggestions; I will try APM who may be able to shed some light on the start & finish of the production year.
Cheers,
Oldtimer
I know a great many of you have had sleepless nights tossing over in your minds as to what does "R.S.M.M." mean, which is stamped into the top of my
1856 P'53 "Windsor" Musket. In desperation, I almost got to the point of writing a strong letter to the London "Times" for assistance,
but thinking back to Monty Python's "The meaning of life" I knew then, deep down, that that would have got me ...
Interesting. My Windsor Enfield had the tang marking 'R.S.D.M. 500' With the 500 at right angle to the lettering. I had arrived after a long search on
Royal South Down Militia, an Irish Militia unit. I had assumed that yours was another Irish Militia rifle but was unable to locate which. Where did you find
out about the Malta Engineers? The Sappers and Miners were incorporated into the Royal ...
G'day Bill, Thanks for your comments. My information came from a long-time collector of British Militaria in Australia, who had at one time in his
collection a similar marked P'53. His research at the time came up with "R"oyal "S"appers & "M"iners, followed with
"M" for Malta. He also suggested that my other query relating to "T.H" was "Tower Hamlets"
I followed this "Malta" lead up through ...
I should have taken the above comment a step further, which, in this instance, does the "M" really stand for "Malta"?. The suggestion is
from earlier research done in the 1960's by another collector, "M" means Malta.
"M" could mean Milita, but if it did, the "M" would be on its' own, above a line. Thinking more on this, an open mind should be adopted
until such time as someone produces the ...
