Thread: Swings in Noise Margin and Connection Speed :: General Broadband Chatter :: think broadband

Started 1 month ago by Stuart_
I originally started a thread at Cable Forum but after 7 pages of replied and no end result, I got told to post my troubles to Think Broadband as yous are more DSL-aware. Basically my connection has dropped, significantly: I used to have a decent 1 Mb/s connection of which I could play games online on the PS3 and YouTube videos would actually buffer at normal rates, but now, my ...

I'm not sure everyone is willing to read 7 pages, especially as there was no end result. Just to short circuit this a little are you cable or ADSL? If you are ADSL could you tell us your BT exchange and your router stats? See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php and http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Them 7 pages have all the information I'm about to post, and probably ever other question about my router stats, phoning Virgin Media, etc but here you go: Reading my original post will help you understand that I live over 5 miles away from my exchange (Dunvegan) and BT checker says I can get 512 kbps at the very very best, but it is highly unlikely. I used to get 1 MB/s or more so, ...

Do you have a test socket within your BT master socket? If you do it is useful to get the stats from there as it could rule in or out your internal wiring as the source of your low speeds. See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php Also has the bell/ring wire been removed?

Stuart_ replied 1 month ago
In my thread on Cable Forum I have already stated that it makes no difference in the test socket, so it rules out the internal wiring. I have no idea about the bell/ring wire.

john2007 replied 1 month ago
The bell wire (if present) can act as a big radio aerial and feeds noise into the ADSL signal. You say you have a test socket. Have a look at step 4 on http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html

Stuart_ replied 1 month ago
Will taking them wires out that are connected mean that I will have to connect through the master socket constantly?

john2007 replied 1 month ago
As long as you leave the wires which are connected to pins 2 and 5 you will be fine. The other wires haven't been needed for years. If you are unsure then please take a digital picture of the wires, upload it to a site such as http://imageshack.us/ and post a link so that someone can double check.

Stuart_ replied 1 month ago
So after that, am I just to check my stats again?

john2007 replied 1 month ago
Yes, although in theory it shouldn't make any difference (because when you get the stats from the test socket it should have isolated the bell wire anyhow).

Stuart_ replied 1 month ago
So technically this is useless, I will do it nonetheless. Whats the next step?

The connection has stayed steady, same with and without the Sky cable connected to the Test Socket.

The Sky doesn't even connect to the internet until you actually use its internet services. Sky boxes can cause problems just by being attached to the phone line, they don't have to be in active use as far as I am aware.

Time to put the faceplate on I reckon and try a day like that, still without the Sky box plugged in at all. But don't do it right now as you will get a poor speed at this time of day. Do it well into daylight tomorrow . Looking good, as we now know it is not the line itself. All we have to do is add things one at a time until it screws up again, and we will have identified the cause. Replacing the faceplate is step 1. Bob's...

It was prob caused by the connections to 5 and 2 at the extensions, removing the ring line may have disturbed them. If you have a choice the move the router to the master.
