I've added the following notations to the first few posts, but thought I'd copy them here for those following the thread.
Update:
0 - When I did the Opamp swap, I used a cheap chip socket. Under use, the chip has a tendency to wiggle around and not make proper contact, audible by an annoying hum. Use of a high-quality socket or, even better, soldering the chip to the board/old chip ...

sorry to bring back such an old thread but i have a question...
I have a Palomino V8 would actually like to remove the tone control completely. I have been using the amp by pluggin directly in to the line out wqith a stereo plug, bypassing boththe preamp as well as the tone control and it sounds killer. But it also only runs at full volume, so i would like to use the preamp minus the tone ...
What about speaker change? I have the V58 w/ 8" speaker & man it is bright. I just noticed an 8" Jensen MOD 8-20 is only $14 (+$9 ship.) from tubedepot.com, anybody know about these speakers?
Another quick tweak.
I've been contemplating tone stacks and it appears the V8 is very similar to the Marshall 18 watt [ http://amps.zugster.net/articles/tone-stacks#18Wat t] . The resistor values on the V8 are higher - I'm assuming that's to cut the signal strength to allow for the effects loop, which the Marshall doesn't have. The V8 also has a .0022 uF 100v capacitor [C12] the Marshall ...

I know it's not the same, but I found it funny.
That's a unique tone control circuit.
I was gona say that I've had good luck snipping bright caps in a lot of SS newer amps, but that's not really a ...

What the hell is this spammer? That line is my quote from earlier post... crazy... If had to unplug anything during disassembly, check those. Check everything you touched. But it's likely a bad joint. Are these thru plated or double sided boards?

So we didn't order any, but I would love to hear how they work for you, they may be just what you need for a low volume, bedroom tube amp.
So Verne, now that you've documented everything on a schematic I think the mods should get their own name. When I tell people of these mods I'm calling them the "Verne Andru mods" - unless you prefer something else.
Shouldn't the electronics be shielded? You ask what I want to accomlish. I just assumed electronics should be enclosed in metal, like the Marshall example I gave or a guitar cavity. If it's not needed, I won't do it.
Verne Andru! You're apologizing to me about raunching out on me. Why? I said the graphics are beautiful also. It was you getting into your playing I was referring to, and you were using distorted tones. After the almost electronic treatise you've been posting here, it was surprising to hear you get a little nasty. I'm definitely going to try your stereo wall volume regulator suggestion. You just mentioned the Peavey power soak,...
great stuff dude, thanks for posting this! i have the palomino v8 myself stock. good job! the clean tone of your modded v8 was very tasteful. wish my v8 can do that
