Thread: Stuck in park & no brake lights!!

Started 2 years, 3 months ago by blue '03 EX-L
Stuck in park & no brake lights!! What do you think? Could this be a brake light switch preventing the car from shifting out of park? We figured out how to get it unstuck via the steering column but still no brake lights. If it is the switch, is it an easy replacement? Any links to this problem on another post? BTW I checked the fuse on the stop lights and it was OK. The problem has been ...

Yes, the brake light switch would cause both the no lights and the no shift. Check the switch and the wires that are connecting to it. I think its the same switch for both.

Thanks. I just got back from the Honda dealership and paid $9.55 for a new switch. Before I bought it, I cleaned the old one and plugged it back in the harness so the spring loaded button would keep the brake lights on. It would work but go off about every 3rd or 4th time I'd release the button so I decided it was time for a new one. The new one looks more "beefy" so hopefully it will ...

no brake lights We had our 04 at the dealer because among other things, the car had no primary brake lights but the secondary one (the one at the top of the rear of the van) worked fine. The car shifted fine though. The dealer found the wires going from the brake pedal to a control box were loose going into the box regards

Just went thru the same deal. The switch couldn't be any easier to change out. Had the same issue with not being able to shift out of park and no brake lights. Switch is cheap enough that even if that's not the problem you're not out alot. One caution, the switch actually has two sets of contacts. one normally open and one normally closed. One set is used for the brake lights and the ...

My 03 ody is doing this also. It won't come out of the park setting unless I press the brake pedal all the way down until it unlocks itself. I usually can hear "click " to identify that I can shift out of park an into another gear. Is this the switch that needs to be changed out ( white plug ) ? Yes, that is the dreaded brake light switch. Mine started out the same way as yours. If gets more and more difficult to get it out of park till one day no amount of standing on the peddel will help. If you get to this stage prior to buying the switch there is an "out". Did you ever wonder what the little plastic plug on top of your steering column is? It's the port to the manual parking ...

Thanks ZZZ28. Hopefully, I can change this today ( saturday ) if the part is available at my local honda dealership. If I have any questions, i'll know where to go. Again, thanks.

I went to Honda and picked it up for $7.52. Noticed that it was a different color (black) and alot beefier. Changed out the old and in with the new ( 5 minutes ). Measured the stock spacing with my calipers ( 10.80mm ). Plug and play. Went on a test drive to test cruise control release braking. Dialed !! Man, if if wasn't for this ODYCLUB forum, i'd be spending a forture at ...

I might be experiencing the same problem, but I'm not sure. On occassion when I start my '02 Ody, the display for the transmission "tree" doesn't light up, i.e., the "P" is not lit up and even when pressing on the brake pedal it won't shift out of park. I don't know if the brake light is also not working when this occurs. When this occurs, I turn off the engine, restart and it then ...

Unplug the connector, turn the main switch counter-clockwise (left) until it stops, pull out old switch. Remove the round plastic adjuster/holder out of the bracket. Replace with the new units. Just reverse the procedure to get everything in place. TIP: Make sure when you re-install the new switch, that the main button of the switch is compressed all the way down against the brake pedal. If you look at your current set-up, look what happens...

Your problem might be of different nature. The problem I had was related to a switch going bad, so a car computer didn't know if the brake pedal was depressed. My ody will not allow you to switch gears before you press on a brake pedal. I didn't have any problems with brakes per se, pedal worked normally, and braking was okay. If your brakes work unusually, I strongly suggest you inspect them or have someone else do that. I...

gsuch, EricD in the thread I linked for you is a dealer service manager. He is not active here anymore. However, in that thread he lists a Honda service bulletin that describes your exact problem. When you take it in, reference that tsb. As a matter of fact, print it out and take it with you.

Haven't done it personally, but don't you just unplug the connector and unscrew the switch and vice versa? Tighten all the way then back out 3/4 turn and tighten the locking nut and hook up connector.

Thanks to this thread for helping me replace the brake switch in our 03 Odyssey. It's amazing how a simple $7 part can strand your wife at the store.
