Right, lets get the OcUK pre-requisites out of the way!
Prices are different in Gibraltar than UK, higher 2nd hand, lower new car prices, due to the amount of cars on the road, and availability, I know the equivalents are cheaper in Blighty.
Car must fit a double pram in the boot
Not interested in Diesel, do less than 10,000km a year (around 6200m)
4 Door saloon, biggish engine, ...
I'm a massive Alfa/Fiat fan but out of those two I'd go for the 530i, just generally because the Alfa isn't considerably cheaper to make it the worthwhile purchase. It's certainly not as good as the 5.
It's a class size bigger than the 156 as well so will help with the pram.
530i will cost more to run though, especially services.
The Alfa most likely will brake down though, guy at my old work had one. Think out of the year ownership it was on the road something stupid like 4 months.
I would buy the 530i, but I'd make sure it was a Sport.
They are quite different cars, a 530i SE is a comfortable, wafty cruiser. The Alfa 156 GTA is a nutcase Alfa. The 530i is properly built and has a proper layout. The 156 is cheap, nasty and wrong wheel drive. The 156 looks lairy and sporty looking, a 530i SE is refined and executive looking.
What exactly do you want from a car?
The Alfa will likely face issues, probably electrical, probably in the cabin and not under the bonnet, being a 156.
But it will take an idiot to fail to get it back on the road right away. Parts arrive by 10pm if ordered before 5pm. Do you know a garage who has a clue.
Come to think of it, same goes for the 530, you don't want Tony working on it.

Well this is what EVO magazine said about, cant believe we are still on this subject but here you go anyway. "You're still not sure. I can tell. To be honest I wasn't expecting great things either, despite the intrinsic rightness of the 156.After all, 250bhp is an awful lot of power to direct through the front wheels" "Within the first mile we know it's worth the effort. Not only is the GTA a...
