Unless the actual worm gear is badly worn thinking its new seals and shims if needed...unless I am missing something ...

I am not sure about the '73 but top line makes a rebuild kit for some of these gearboxes and if I am not mistaken very affordable. and better yet they are an advertiser on the forum hope they have what you need. Joe

Joe, I checked out Top Line ..Nope no rebuild kits available they do offer a NEW Gear Box but list no price "Must Call" Probably would scare the heck out of anybody....Well maybe I can pick up an old steering box from Samba and disassemble and see if its possible to match up seals with an outside company. I had a corn planter where I was able to cross reference replacement bearings that were...

Chirco here in Tucson has 'em for $280.

Flash, That's my point a Std bug is only $85.00 while the super is almost $300.00 just does not seem right what makes this box so special other then it is for a Super seems anything associated with the Super Beetle is X2 normal cost ........Guess that's what they call " Supply and Demand "....

I'm no expert by any means, but it could have something to do with the front end difference between the SB's and standards. The McPhearson struts for one thing. They allow a Super to turn in a 3' smaller radius than the standard Bug.

I think the 71 and 73 have the same steering gear, if so I may be able to help you out. I have a 71 super parts car that has the steering gear still installed I just have to get a little dry weather to be able to take it out if you are not in to big a hurry I will try to get it out in the next couple weeks and test to see what king of condition it is in, then we can work something out. I just ...

I am in Southern Ontario and I have one out of a 74. I would be willing to part with it as I am unlikely to ever need it. If you post a photo of yours I can tell you if mine looks the same.

Turns out it wasn't the gear box... it was wheel bearings and the spindle... a relief on one end, but it seems that a right outside spindle for a 73 super is like trying to find a rear tail light for an alien spacecraft!!!!

That's ok.  I have not made the trip up into my loft to rescue this part but I know that it is up there.

in turkey our mechanics fix the steering boxes. as far as I know, a steering box can be fixed 2 times in its lifetime and than becomes trash. so if yours is not fixed ever, you may consider finding a machanic to do. it is not very hard. once you dismantle the part, you clean the metal parts with gasoline, grease them, change the bushings and the screws and reassamble.

Hi The supers steering box is totally different to the NON Super beetles steering boxes, which do last forever.. if kept greased with lithium based MOLY grease... and kept adjusted.. I've never seen inside a supers steering box... but they certainly have some weak points.. maybe a bush wears out and allows the other components to wear badly.. ?? I remember reading where someone in Australia bought a heap of brand new Super beetle...
