Thread: Squeak from aux belt

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by ( |-| |2 ][ $
It happened a few times last winter and here it is again this winter. I presume it's my aux belt, (squeaking sound that changes pitch with engine revs which disappears on warmer days or when the engine is warm), do you think I've guessed correctly? If so it's on a VAG 1.8T would it just be a case of tightening the tensioner is this something I can do myself? Who else has had this problem...

It will be a automatic tensioner that cant be adjusted, the tensioner goes weak on those engines as well. The belt wil need pulling off and replacing and the pulleys it runs on checked for play, a new tensioner wil be required if it has gone weak.

Dam, worst case. Has anyone had theirs replaced, what price should I be aiming to pay for new belt, tensioner and labour?

Hmm, price might be justifyed.. Is the tensioner in an awkward place? On my engine you have to jack up the engine and remove one of the drive shafts IIRC.. as its in a complete bitch of a place

Go to a "backstreet"? It'll probably be half that, if not better.

sounds like the tensioner is on its way out i had the same on my tdi, replaced the tensioner and the belt, noise went away i paid around the price you quoted, but it was in norway where labour costs are £100/hr..

Did aux belts really need automatic tensioners developing for them? 2 spanners and about 30 seconds labour to "tension" the aux belt on the Manta....

Looks just like a spring loaded lever to me, access looks pretty simple too. Might give it ago myself, I'm yet to find out how much "tension" it's under though.
