An article at Gamasutra says that Warren Spector 'actually approached Disney not to tackle a Mickey Mouse project, but to find a publisher for a spiritual heir to his renowned Deus Ex' and that he may work on a 'spiritual successor'.

Yeah, it was a lack of accessibility that totally crippled the first Deus Ex. The game was like a big brick wall made entirely of how unpopular it was because of how streamlined it wasn't.
