Thread: Southwest Airline

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by AussieKathy
I need to book a flight to Vegas in April. I have found some cheap flights with Southwest Airlines. Is this airline okay I haven't heard of them before? Any other airline I should consider?

Southwest has been around for nearly 40 years and is consistently rated as one of the best airlines in America from both a customer service and safety perspective, and has been able to do it while maintaining profitability more consistently than most other airlines. Southwest always offers competitive fares with less restrictions than most other carriers. It's a great way to ...

You probably haven't heard of it because they only do flights INside the USA. They are a very good choice for a short flight as you describe!!

It's a bit of a cattle car (no pre-reserved seats), but they have consistently excellent on-time and safety records. In certain big cities they've been successful by using secondary airports (like Midway in Chicago instead of O'Hare and Baltimore in DC rather than Reagen). They're about the only US airline on which your "bags fly free." As riffsmom said, you probably ...

It is true that you don't have reserved seats but it is NOT a "scrum" to board. Everything is done in a very orderly manner going by the no. listed on your boarding pass. You just check in on line 24 hrs before boarding and you will get a letter(ABC ) and a no. which gives you the order in which to board. IF you choose you can pay a small amount extra to guarantee that you board ...

Southwest is a great choice for LAX to Vegas --also to most of their other destinations. You do need to check in 23 hours and 59 minutes to get an early placement in the line up for boarding IF you have a large party and all want to sit together OR if you want to use the overhead compartments for carryons. SW caters to business/local travel--so the overheads fill up quickly....

If you have the opportunity to depart out of Bob Hope Airport in Burbank (airport code BUR), rather than LAX, I would do so. This tiny, "domestic travel" airport serves Southwest and a number of other airlines from its 2 small terminals, with only 1/10th the passenger volume of LAX. Another nice feature of the airport applies to southwest, exclusively. At BUR, southwest ...

I love every flight I took so far with Southwest(and it's been a lot) It is just a now frills airline that not only the customers like to take, but also the people who work for it. Yeah, they are proud working for Southwest and they will show it aswell You might here some "over the board" jokes and funny remarks along the flight that would not "fly"(no pun intended) at a more...

thanks for your help. Sounds like it will be a good airline. For 1 hour on a plane I don't care where I sit.

Southwest Airlines is often the first place locals turn to booking a flight when they want to fly within California or to Las Vegas . Its reliably run; lots of flights; good staff; and free baggage. Its a good way to fly to Las Vegas. Have a good trip.

AussieKathy- Adding to the other posts, FYI Southwest (code WN) is one of the top 5 US airlines as far as number of flights, passengers carried, aircraft, etc. They pioneered the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) business model which broke the mold of the way "legacy" airlines do business. In Oz both Virgin Blue and Jetstar are similar to WN. There are some potential disadvantages to WN...

Oh, I should say(in regarding of the Op question) that Southwest is superior by any means when compared to Ryan Air or Air Berlin, I just mentioned it as a comparison to other parts of the World...

dhauk- Southwest started showing red ink a few quarters ago and it's been getting redder. It was their first loss in years....they had very favorable fuel hedges that secured their fuel supply at a low price. That insulated them from fuel costs when they went through the roof in summer 08. It also buffered against losses in other areas. As their fuel hedges are expiring the losses are starting to bleed through to the bottom line; also...

I forgot to say Davdaven..you are spot on with Jet Star in Australia. I flew with them once to move states and I will never fly them again. The flight attendants were so rude it has put me off and I dont like the way they operate. I have never had trouble with Virgin Blue. We need an edit button on trip advisor!

To add to the recommendation for Southwest, we just returned from a trip to New Mexico and Texas from San Jose . On the whole trip we had 6 segments of flights, with three destinations and a plane change for each. It sounds terrible, but was not...very efficient. I checked in, online, as mentioned, 24 hours in advance and in every case we had low number places in the A group and were able to board in the first group and get good seats when we...

Southwest is one of the best managed companies in the world, and it's been pretty consistently profitable. They'll get you there on time and without charging for baggage. I wish they flew to more parts of the world.
