Japan is 25th largest country in the world and you have a far too ambitious itinerary. Why would you arrive at Narita and then immediately take Shinkansen to Kyushu? Makes no sense. Better to land at airport on northern part of Kyushu (think its Kita Fukuoka). A week in Kyushu should suit....lots to do, Nagaski is much prettier and more historic than Hiroshima IMHO. Do the circuit from ...

As much as I agree that arriving in Tokyo then training all the way to Kyushu is unnecessary, I wouldn't exactly say the whole trip is "too ambitious". I spent 23 days by myself once, saw 21 cities and completed 95% of my itinerary. I had experience in Japan before that, and I had carefully planned everything (yet left plenty of slack). Only missed one city, and that was due to poor train ...

I don't know where you are coming from but it will be a long first day. Options are you might fly to Oita from Haneda using the domestic flight extension to your international flight for ~10,000yen extra. After Beppu, from Oita you might take a ferry to Matsuyama, then to Hiroshima. Stop at Odawara for Hakone on the way to Tokyo.

However, when people told me that I should travel southwards instead for the autumn leaves, I agreed that it will be a better itinerary. I will be coming in from Singapore and there's a hefty charge to change ...

What is your budget? Lived in japan 20 years ago and visited for most of May last year. It is much better to book in advance. There is nice hostel in Hiroshima which you'll find on-line. The Comfort chain of hotels are very reasonable for Japan and include breakfast (about$60/night for a single).

There are many business hotel chains, i.e. Toyoko-Inn, Green Hotels, Superhotels, etc. If you don't have bookings, when you arrive, go to a travel agent in or near the station. They will find one for you for a fee(~500yen). Later in the evening, some are discounted to fill the rooms. There are so many in Hakata/Tenjin or Hiroshima area that you should not have any problems. Also try http://...
