Hi,
All of my music is stored on a 1TB external drive via USB 2.0.
My songs have played perfectly in previous versions, albeit a little bit of lag compared to the local HDD, but still good. Ever since iTunes 9 songs of even 3 minute duration take a good 4-5 seconds to start playing.
Quite annoying, anyone else with this issue?...
I have a large library on an internal drive on my early 2008 MacPro and I find iTunes 9 excruciatingly slow. It takes minutes for iTunes to regain mouse focus and for the top menu bar change to iTunes. It takes tens of seconds to respond to pause/play mouse clicks. But if I stop, hide everything, and then bring iTunes back to the front, the responsiveness returns.
This is ...
I've just upgraded as well and found it really slow to respond, however in the top info section in iTunes it said it was analysing gapless tracks, its now finished and is running at full speed.

I am having the same problem. I'm using a new Macbook Pro and I've never had any sort of lag issue. I'm also storing all of my music on a USB 2 external HD.

I've been experiencing swirly rainbows every time I attempt to do anything really. This is the slowest I've ever seen it. An update will be appreciated!!! The new version looks really awesome. I'm sure it will be once it actually works ;o)
Mac Pro...
I was having lag problems a few weeks ago.
Things I have done since then...
-upgrade to snow leopard
-create a fresh itunes library and reimport all my media
That seemed to clear them up. Not having any issues in iTunes 9.

I found that toggling "Keep my itunes folder organized" off seemed to remedy the problem. My only guess is that there is some background processing going on with the new update. I have no idea what that could be though.
I forgot to mention that I am using an external drive for my itunes library.

I use iTunes 9.0 on my iBook G4 with a USB 2.0 Hardrive, I thought it was only me since I have a slow Mac. My PC with Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4GHz, 6GB RAM and 640GB HD 7200RPM and runs it very smoothly. I think it's the Mac version. I will never put music on my PC and only Mac's for personal reasons. A performance update is needed.
Mac Specs on the bottom of my post....
VERY slow and hangs constantly. I can hardly use it on my G5. My library is stored on my main hard drive.

This is such depressing news - I just downloaded 9.0 hoping it would run faster, not slower! It's definitely down to the size of the library and processor speed.
I have a 1TB external drive filled with music, and it's not really possible to load more than half of that into the library without serious performance problems. On my older Powerbook G4 which I (try to) use as a media ...
I'm in the reasonably well organized 'category' with my music collection, I've around 80 or 90Gb of music (connected to a 500Gb gtech-GDrive via USB 2) .. should be fine, in fact it was.. What I don't understand about all this is that some tracks play fine, some don't..they get beach ball.. My content varies by being imported from my cd collection, vinyl thats been digitized to tracks I've made in...
I am also finding that itunes is excruciatingly slow, from adding streaming feeds to genius uploading... Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.6) iPhone, 2x airport express, linksys 350N
hi there, I tried playing songs from itunes store and yes, they do start quick. But so do many others in my library. Thanks to your post, though, I've noticed that - in my case - AAC files always start immediately while mp3 (VBR or not) always lag. (sample size n = approx. 10) mp3 playback lags between 1 and 4 sec. AAC files play basically immediately. This is with the "keep iTunes Media folder organized" ON. When I turn it off...

Agreed with the solution of unticking the 'keep my itunes library organised'. If you guys remove the tick everything should function well, I've just tried it. Macbook Pro 17" (First Intel Version), iPhone 3Gs, iPod classic 120gb Mac OS X (10.6)
Clicked "Let iTunes Manage My Library" to "OFF". Went to iTunes preferences > Advanced > Clicked Manage My Library "OFF" > Clicked "RESET". QUESTION: To those who are enjoying faster iTunes scrolling, did I follow the correct procedure? Scrolling through songs is faster, but not as fast as iTunes 8. Activity monitor shows iTunes using 20% - 58% of CPU. iMovie was not ACTIVE....

SO slow since iTunes 9. slow ripping and slow on the wireless uptake. PLEASE Apple, stop treating us all like beginners. An idea: how about two Apps, 1 called Itunes-Early and iTunes- Advanced (for advanced users only). Seriously, you can do all the intro a fluff new stuff on one, and let the rest of us MILLION+ users have a more streamlined faster version. PLease. please Give me my itune 8 back! lso already sick of this new mini-player...
Not exactly sure when I updated to iTunes 9, so I can not be certain the problems I am seeing are related to this or not. But itunes has become extremely slow. I have all my files on an external drive connected by USB2 port, but for a while now, it seems impossible to import enw music files or update tags. Currently 30GB f songs in my library, but I have still a lot of music I am sorting while adding them to itunes. 70Gb about remaining. I do...
