Thread: Soft top dilema. Takes two to latch it closed.
Started 1 month, 1 week ago by AntonyR
Is there something obvious to adjust to take the tension off of the extension(closing) of the top so as to make it easier to get it latched? Do the side cables allow for adjustment to help with this? I haven't tried it yet, since the Convertible Top Installation guide doesnt mention anything about my problem.
You can ease the tension slightly by adjusting the frame mounts. They are
just behind the door- 3 bolts. If you search for a convertible install
manual you will find the pics to help plus a more thorough procedure
description. The side cables have no effect on tensioning the top, just the
side (window) flaps.
If all is good with the top, try what's at the bottom of page 13, it might help. It sounds like there may be something more going on with your top though, so make sure everything is lined up properly before you start filing anything down.

AntonyR, did you install a canvas Stayfast with padded sides by any chance? I installed one on a client's '77 Spider starting with the frame in the lowest postion, figuring I could move it up if needed. Without the rear bow glued in, I tried latching the top. I had to resort to using ropes tied to the inside of the door (with panels off) to help pull it into place. I was really afraid the ...
The stop block idea is definitely worth looking into. This top was on the car when I bought it so I don't know if it is the brand mentioned above. I know that the interior is sun beaten, most likely because they couldn't get the top latched!
I had a 34 year old replacement vinyl top on a 69 (Duetto style car-top). The top had shrunk so much that I had a bear getting it latched. It had "stretch marks" developing and was starting to rip. I rarely had it up except in storing the car or rain. I was worried about breaking the latches. I'd loosely latch both the clamps. I'd have to work it in close guiding the bow over the windshield,...

What seems to help with mine is the hot sun...provided you wash the car or at least get the top good and wet. Allowing it to dry in the top-up, stretched position does stretch it and make it easier to close.
I noticed mine gradually getting harder to latch each year as it slowly shrank...this definitely seems to help.
Since new (86 spyder) the top was very hard to latch. If You leave it in the sun for an hour or so it is easier. When I store it for the winter, I have the top up, windows open, and a good quality cover. During the 4 months of summer, the top stays down. If it rains, I just drive a little faster until I get to the garage. Just before I put it away, I leave the top as closed as I can ...
I find if I leave the top down for a number of days the canvas shrinks
making it very hard to latch. I put the top up (with difficulty) soak it
with a hose this puts the stretch back in and always put the top up when I
leave the car. This has pretty much fixed the problem. I find if I latch
one side then release it then do the same to the other side it makes it
easier.
