I would send a prove it letter, they need to prove you held an account with them that is in arrears. It is possible that as the supply was shared by this meter, that it was maybe an amount owed by the landlord but they have incorrectly chased the tenants. As you say you are not aware of any account with British gas that you owe money too and you have never received paperwork. So a prove it...

It'll never hurt to have proof of these things and for the sake of 75p I don't think it's worth...
