Thread: So I was pulling the VANOS off

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by baknblack
and was having trouble with the intake cam. I'm at TDC and the crankshaft lock pin is in place so i start putting the Cam lock blocks on and the exhaust lock slips perfectly into place with no effort but the intake Cam lock block just wont drop into place. I tried using the 24mm wrench on the Cam flats to help wiggle the lock block into place but no dice, with ...

1. Yes, unbolting the exhaust and moving the intake cam was the correct thing to do. Now you just have to retime it properly prior to reassembly. I suspect it was timed wrong before. You'll need to remove the secondary timing gears, and check the alignment of the primary. Basically, follow the cam timing instructions on Pelican or Dr Vanos sites as if you have removed all the cam gears....

Even with the flywheel lock pin in place, you can still rotate the engine ~2° or so around TDC. When I redid my timing, I also had trouble getting the intake cam block on (it sat 5-7 mm off the head). Rotating the crank a little (with the lock in place) moved the intake a little and allowed the blocks to sit perfectly level. So from what I gather even using the OE tools, the engine timing ...

Mine wouldn't move enough with the pin in place to allow the lock to drop into place. I also frequently checked the timing marks to make sure it remained TDC. Plus the exhaust cam sat perfect, it was only the intake cam that was off so I opted to loosed the cam to cam sprockets and allow the intake came to rotate CC so the lock sit correctly. I am going to take ScotcH's advice and verify or ...
