Thread: Sniper Shooting thru scope

Sniper Shooting thru scope http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZU80XnemeU So most people have heard that in Vietnam Gunnery Sgt Carlos Norman Hathcock II shot a North Vietnamese enemy sniper thru his scope and killed him. I was wondering how many people think that it could be done. I saw this episode of Myth Busters where ...

for giggles i once shot a cheap scope with a marlin 9mm camp gun point blank. i now realize it violated safety rules. ....anyway the bullet never made it past the first lens. bobn

Just questions 1-how many lenses were in the Viet snipers scope. 2-how thick was the snipers scope tube, and was it steel or aluminim? 3- at what distance was the shot taken, and what load used? Am of personal opinion way too many variables for "myth bustin"

Wow. I would have NEVER thought a scope could stop a bullet that way, much less from 3 feet away. After the scope stopped the first shot, I said "Ok, I can definitely understand deflection" and it looked like it was a high hit... Then 3 more shots with the same result. Hmmm... I may have missed some of the information about what Cartridge they were using, and what ...

IIRC they received a lot of heat on that one, and they revisited it later and used the correct Soviet PU style scope for the test. A quick google search turns up a narrative of the second test here: http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/Mythbusters.aspx On edit: Here is the video of the second test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCV75G88-cs...

I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Hathcock before his death and if he said it happened, then I believe it. __________________ -Tim-

I doubt that the scope itself was the intended target. One of those "It just worked out that way..." deals. And an '06 bullet is gonna blow through a scope without slowing down enough to measure--in terms of the ruination of whoever's looking through it. __________________ "You're from BATFE? Hey, great! Well I guess I never would have posed this question if I had seen the revisit. I just want to say also that IMO Gunnery Sgt Carlos Norman Hathcock II is a American hero that should have received the Medal of Honor. __________________ “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have” -- Thomas Jefferson--

I sure don't see any reason to doubt Hathcock's story. Stuff happens. Sometimes it's seriously good stuff. To thread drift into a "weirdly" about projectiles and where they wind up: This is from a WW II-era Reader's Digest squib from the bottom of a page, so use all the salt you want. A GI in the Pacific in WW II was on the receiving end of a Jap artillery barrage during the night. He felt some sort of...

There's absolutely no doubt that any round, hunting OR military style, will make hash of a scope. The question is whether any of those would be able to drill perfectly through the scope, blowing through all of the lenses, and still come straight out the eyepiece without deflecting. I say the liklihood of that happening is nil. __________________ Coworkers. A convenient source of food in a post apocalyptic world.

When specifically asked about that shot he claimed it was luck and wouldn't say anymore about it. __________________ Don't mess with my momma, flag or apple pie Life member: American Legion, VFW, NRA, GOA and JPFO

I like to watch Mythbusters... they are fun... you can take all the test you want... Science is always used to prove a preconceived notion... you do the test until you prove that then stop.... Here is my experience in life.... every scientific 'fact' in the world can show it can't happen.... if the Gunny said it did, then it did.

As I recall from reading the book he knew the guy was there and shot at a shiny reflection which happened to be the scope lense. From researching him over the years I'd say he was a humble honest man that was exceptionally talented with a rifle. I believe him. __________________ "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." The Dalai Llama (5/15/01, The Seattle...
