Ok, so my oven is really old and the heating element caught fire the other day. I know it can be replaced, but this is not the first issue we've had with this stove. It is like 25 years old and only two of the burners work. SO, I am getting a new one and really would like a smooth top stove, but I was told 2 different stories today. 1 salesman said I could can, no problem, the other one said ...
I hate my smooth top, but I prefer gas. In fact we just put in a gas line for the future stove (which we won't get until this one dies-whenever that will be). I have canned on my smooth top without problems however.

Ditto.
I have used my pressure canner on my smooth top. It isn't bigger than the ring for the heating element. I have heard you shouldn't use any pan that is bigger than the ring though. So, I can't use my extra-large water bath on it.
One ...
I absolutely love my smooth top range! It looks just as clean and nice today as it did when I bought it nine years ago! I am not fanatic about cleaning it instantly, and I still haven't had any problems. When I had regular burners, it always looked dirty, even after I just scrubbed it. I have canned on mine as well (not a lot, but some) and it has been fine.
I have never used gas before, so ...
My MIL has a smooth stop stove and she can't can on hers, and niether can my cousin. I wonder if it depends on the model. I, however, LOVE my gas range. It is just as easy to clean as a smooth top, and I loved canning on it this year. Smooth tops were a little scary as the whole top gets warm, even though they aren't supposed to, when you turn just one burner on.

My feelings exactly. Hate the smooth top. Really miss my gas stove.
I've always wanted a smooth top, but when we bought our new house it had gas in it. I don't mind the gas so much, it is a bit of an adjustment to get used to at first, but is not too bad to clean. My mom and sisters all have smooth top, and love, love, love it.
If your two choices are smooth top or coil top, I would go with smooth definitely. It might be worth looking into gas though, ...
I had a smooth top when I wasn't canning and loved it because it was so easy to keep clean. Now we live in a house with gas, and we've done some canning, so I guess it's good. Real cooks love the control of gas. I guess I'm not a real cook, because I still hate cleaning all the grills.
I LOVE my smooth top stove. I love how easy it is to clean, and haven't ever had any problems over 12 years with other parts of the top getting hot when just one burner is on. I am now switching to gas though and am going to a gas on glass cooktop. I have heard that I'm not supposed to can on my electric smooth top, but I do my canning on the back porch on a camping stove anyway. Love to ...
When I first started using a gas stove, I hated it. We just moved and now have a smooth top and everyday I am begging for my gas stove again. I really don't care to clean it because it was so much better then what I have now. I feel like I have to cook everything twice because it is taking me so long getting use to how each temp setting cooks.
I've had all three - coil, gas, smooth.
I love my current smooth-top. I can on it without any problems. I even use my water bath which is slightly larger than my widest ring. I recommend a dark smooth-top, not a white one. Mine is black and hides everything!
I liked my gas one, too.
Hated, hated, hated my past coil stove tops.

My water bath canner is ridged on the bottom and is maybe two inches wider all around. It might take a little longer to heat up,...

A water bath canner is usually just a large pot with a rack inside and a lid that just sets on top, they are usually stainless steel or...
I will never have anything but a gas range ever again. I dream of upgrading to a commercial quality gas range someday. I cook a LOT. LOVE to cook. For me function is a thousand times more important than looks. I don't want a pretty range that doesn't do the job well.
I have also had all three. I'd say spring for the extra expense and get plumbed for gas...it is SO wonderful. It is truly a cook's dream as you can microadjust the temperature. I had a love/hate relationship with my smoothtops. Canning with them was a nightmare as was cleaning them. They look nicer, but that is really the only good thing I can say about them. I would do coils over flat top if you are a big canner...if you just can a...
