St. Louis will probably give him an incentive laden one-year deal. I don't think he could get anything better.

Good for him. I'm sure Glavine does too. Meanwhile, Maddux - hands down the best of the three during their glory days - is enjoying taking his kids to school and playing golf. Is it a coincidence that the guy with the most talent has the smallest ego, and knew when to call it quits instead of sticking around like a bitter, past-his-prime athlete?

Go away Smoltz, just GO Away for good. (As a player) He can offer somebody some good as a pitching coach or maybe even be a manager with his personality someday. He made a fool of himself in Boston. His last real season was in 2007. Hopefully Glavine will also stay away. He's probably realized that its his time to walk. Maddux did it the right way, he walked away before he ...

Smoltz and Glavine are way over as far as the braves are concerned. Its to bad that Smoltz chose to take the path he did. Its not working out for him, thats for sure.

There is still a place in the game for Smoltz (I think). Its just not as a MLB pitcher anymore. I would like to see him become a manager if he would be willing to pay his dues in somebody's minor league system. He is a bright guy & has leadership qualities. I guess he has earned his right to be stubborn.

Smoltz should go into broadcasting as an analyst or color commentator....period.

That would require first retiring, which he isn't ready to do. If Smoltz keeps up the same antics he pulled last season (blaming his poor outings on the balls, calling out opposing managers during the game for running up the score, etc.), the phrase "Manny being Manny" will be replaced with "Smoltz being Smoltz."

*John Smoltz doesn't know where yet, and the role may be undetermined as well* I wonder if he has finally come to the realization that he would be an asset if he were to go back to being a reliever. If that is the case I would love to see the Braves give him an opportunity to come back and close again. I think he still has the stuff to get the job done. Plus, it would be a good PR move for ...

He had some pretty bad outings with the Cards too, like giving up six runs in four innings against the Reds. He has good enough stuff and stamina to get through a lineup once, but by the second or third time through the order, he starts struggling.

goodgod777 replied 1 month ago
That is why I said I hope he realizes that he would be better suited as a setup man / reliever. If that is the case, like I said originally, the Braves should consider signing him, but for only that role and not as a starter in any way.

"Oh yeah one of my points about Smoltz having an ERA over 4 for the first time in a very long time was that with all the talk about Smoltz hanging around to long unlike Maddux...etc. Maddux is the one that finished his career with 5 straight seasons with an ERA over 4 and almost 6 straight years (3.96 ERA in 2003)." There's no question that Smoltz was a better pitcher than Maddux after he re-joined the rotation. The big...

What you're describing with Smoltz: i.e., the pitching "backwards" aspect is an eerie reminder of the same problem with Brad Lidge and his poor season doing virtually the same thing. Big difference of course is that Lidge didn't have arm surgery and hasn't really lost much on his fastball, but both had location issues big time; nice post!

What a great post. I have no idea why there is such hatred and resentment towards Smoltz and Glavine. Nor do I understand people (us posters) putting down the remaining talent that players like this have. It is much like a 3rd grade science teacher calling Einstein an idiot. Judgement here makes no sense. It doesn't affect us as fans or even the Braves as they have cut ties. Why posters on the board feel it affects them to the point of...
