Ducks inside 25 yards doesnt matter. thats where most of my shots are. The last two years I've been shooting 2.75" 1 1/4 oz #2s at 1375 FPS killed ducks just fine. I paid $8.99 a box. This year I am back to shooting 3" Estate #2s 1 1/4 oz at 1425fps. I seldom shoot any further than 30-35 yards.

The 1450fps should be good to 35-40 yards. The 1600 to 1700 range should add another 10 yards.

Even back in the days of lead, I used to "roll my own" at 1330 fps. Now a day's I prefer to shoot steel in the 1330 to 1425 fps.

Back in the early-90's, I advocated FASTER ...... 1450 fps to be specific. Today, I advocate SLOWER ....... 1450 fps to be specific.

Never going to get anyone to change sides on this one. All I know is I just went and got some more STEEL powder, SAM1 wads, and AA hulls to shoot some 1 oz 3's Saturday morning. Nothing real fast 1550, but I've defeneately gotten the attention of the guys that hunt with me. One shoots nothin but Kent 1 1/4 oz, the other Xpert crap, they both want to try their hand at hand loading ...

So, Remington says they can increase MV to 1700fps without exceeding SAAMI guidelines, yet the loads produce 50% more recoil than other loads which meed SAAMI guidlines. Since pressure is what produces recoil, well.................something doesn't add up to me. (anyone know what payloads Remington is putting in these 1700fps loads?) Alldrakes, where did you find this "50% more recoil" claim?

Thanks... my ascii art skills are not what they once were, but I tried. I think I am with OC on this slower vs faster. I like 1450 fps range with steel. Seem to be ahead too often, though; I've been seeing ducks knuckle. I have not shot at enough ducks this year to really get in any kind of groove. Been shooting a lot of crows and doves with 950 fps subsonics, so I probably have my mind trained for too much lead when shooting the 1450....

That and the fact that Remington never made any "Drylok" ammo.
