Is it bearable or not worth it Depends on your attitude. Some people get bored and keep looking at their watch, others forget about time and love the scenery or make new friends along the way. Bring extra food and drink and maybe a good book and sit near the front for less fumes/engine noise. How far is it from Pakbeng overland to Luang Prabang? See map on http://www.ecotourismlaos.com/...

Thanks heaps guys! Still haven't decided whether or not we'll do Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai first so will end up leaving from one of the two, we're not leaving until Feb so plenty of time to figure it out.

My wife and I had a great time getting from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai to Huay Xai, and down the Mekong to Luang Prabang by slow boat. For detailed descriptions and photos see the "Thailand & Laos" section of Our Travel Journals: http:www.evcal.org . The chaotic disorganized boat trip on the Mekong is an experience you will never forget. No need to get advance "reservations"; get your boat ...

you said up river........? I think you might want to change it to down river........ north thailand to Luang Prabang 2 days one night is alot better/easier than up river prob take about 4 days in a slwo boat cause of the upstream. Just a thought........ plenty bears flowed on the boat, get a decent book, and sit back aand relax. And when you stop in pak beng...... have a shower before 10pm...

How far is it from Pakbeng overland to Luang Prabang? Pak Beng > Oudomxay: ~3.5+h bus Oudomxay > LPB: ~4.5+h bus would rather spend the 'boat time' on the Nam Ou river as #1 suggested, more beautiful river scenery. #6: up river prob take about 4 days in a slwo boat cause of the upstream upriver takes 2 days 1 night too. but boat often reaches Huay Xai too late for people to ...

#7 sorry i thought i read somewhere that i took longer cause of it goingg up stream against the current. And that it seemed logical if it came down stream and took 2 days then going up would take longer. Sorry
