Thread: Singular and Plural

The Police are investigating the murder, but haven't arrested anyone. Please let me know what's wrong with the above sentence or is it correct?

We dont need "but" in this sentence. "but" usually shows contrast. Here you need a conjunction to join both the sentence. using "and" will be appropriate. The police are investigating the murder and they haven't arrested anyone. Police is plural This sentence can be rewritten in different ways depending upon what is intended from it.

In the american version police is a collective noun hence requires a singular verb. sentence should be The Police is investigating the murder, but hasn't arrested anyone. Agree with achar_varun...Police is singular in GMAT...so the correct verb is IS and not ARE..

Police is termed as plural whereever I checked.. Police Definition | Definition of Police at Dictionary.com

Police could be singular and plural both. Depends on the sentence. As far as collective noun is concerned....we say... India win the match (refers to team) And also India wins the match (refers to team as well) I have read some doc where it was mentioned that Police can be plural.
