This seems to happen to about half the single female teachers who've come through my school district, working at rural / small town public schools. Yet another one seems to have gone into loner / voluntary wangta / agoraphobic mode. Another one has looked nothing but depressed and tired every time I've met her ever since she started. I tried to answer this but then I realised there are just too many variables, my reasons for feeling depressed when living in a small rural city are probably not the same as theirs. I doubt there is a 'one size fits all' reason to this. And I doubt it's just the females, men probably hide it better or go out drinking.
Maybe it's harder for single females because their Korean counterparts are all married, or weirdly sheltered home-bodies (that was my experience.) The women are difficult to relate to or schedule time with, and they can't go out with the Korean guys without risking a scandal/harassment. As for the communications black-out, that is cause for some concern, especially if she has friends who ...
