does anyone have the towing spec for this 3/4 ton truck model? i gather it was the last year before the new model was brought out in 1999. thanks alot, Wayne in Calgary -------------------- 'I didnt do it, nobody saw me, you can't prove anything'. Bart Simpson.
Year Make Model Engine Tow Limit 1998 Chevrolet/GMC K2500 Pickup (4WD) 5.7 V-8 7500 Requires Trailering Package. Requires engine-oil cooler. Requires transmission-oil cooler. Requires weight-distributing hitch. Requires 4.10:1 axle ratio. A higher tow rating is listed for pickups that tow fifth-wheel trailers. thanks 4 Winns, and i did find the towing database eventually (that sucker is buried). one more question if you dont mind - the 7,500 lb rating on the 5.7 says 'requires weight distribution hitch'. well, not gonna happen while towing my boat, so do you know how i can get the rating assuming NO weight dist. hitch? and what i meant re the '99's was that was the start of the redesigned models ...
"do you know how i can get the rating assuming NO weight dist. hitch?" Sorry, can't help ya there. I've seen over 5000# mentioned but I don't know. I knew what you meant, just messin' with ya. -------------------- 2002 190 Horizon
The 'classic' 1999's were really not any different than the 1998's. The 5.7 is a great towing motor, not as much HP as the newer 5.3 but good torque at lower RPM's. I have towed with both a 1998 5.7 and a 2007 5.3 and they both do well. Probably the best part of the 1999 classic is being the last year in the line, all the bugs are worked out. My 1998 was a very reliable truck - Also, you ...
I have the same truck, with the C6P package. Tows my relatively small boat (5.6k) like there's nothing back there. My cousin tows a 10k+ fifth wheel travel trailer with his, same year same motor. Yeah, it's over the limit but he's got 200k on his so I guess the truck can handle the weight. Not recommending it, just telling you of his experience with it.
Wayne, Since it is a 3/4 ton, it probably has a 600# dead weight rating. Boat trailers manuals specify a tongue weight of 5-10% of the towed load. So if you keep the tongue weight below 600# you will be OK. Others will tell you that you must follow the truck manufacturers guidance of a minimum of 10% and thus need a WD hitch for over 6000#. But their guidance as based on "trailers" w/o ...
wonderful, guys i really appreciate your 2 cents worth. Gonna look at the truck this weekend armed with your info. Wayne -------------------- 'I didnt do it, nobody saw me, you can't prove anything'. Bart Simpson.
Is this for towing the 170 Horizon you mentioned?? If so, you are so far under capicity to hardly be worth a worry. -------------------- 2001 Hydroswift 22' open bow 2005 Ram 2500 Quad cab CTD 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. 2" lift (for playing, not towing)
nope its for my ginormous and heavy '91 LArson 200. they since took the truck off the market... turns out they are moving to the west coast and will need it for the move. -------------------- 'I didnt do it, nobody saw me, you can't prove anything'. Bart Simpson.

quote: and what i meant re the '99's was that was the start of the redesigned models with the Vortec engines etc so somewhat of a quantum leap in capability i gather. nope. the vortec 5.7s came out in 96. 95 was the old plain ol throttle body 5.7s. the vortec motors on the v8s jumped in HP and TQ. the 98 was "kinda" the last year of that body style...but they still made 99's in that ...

I've got a 1999 Z71 'Classic' w/260HP 5.7L Vortec and tow package. Tow's my rig great, I figure 5000K loaded. Driven south to the gulf a few time with a Lund in tow, always got me there and back, around 10mpg towing. I have a typical Class3 Reese style hitch. -------------------- 2007 Stingray 230LX 6.2L Bravo I
