Thread: Should the military allow people of Middle Eastern descent to counsel returning soldiers?

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by kval07
I know this will turn in to a hot topic. I have wondered about this myself for awhile, and in light of recent events at Fort Hood, thought I'd throw the idea on the table. To start, I am not racist in any way, shape or form. And that is why I am on the fence about this topic. This Major responsible for all the carnage at Fort Hood was of Middle Eastern descent, and we all know he didn't want ...

I had that same question to myself yesterday. How Loyal are these individuals to their religion? If I understand it correctly...if your not a follower, then you are an enemy?

...but more on your topic. I'm not sure it is possible they can provide that service to American Soliders without insult or resentful feelings?

I think there should always be several options to choose from when it comes to counselors/therapists. Some people just don't "click" even under the best of circumstances. And if a soldier has been in the Middle East shooting at and being shot at by Middle Easterners, that's just one more reason they might not want to open up to a counselor of Middle Eastern descent.

Well... Lets see... If our country, and military, judged people based on race, religion, etc... Wouldn't that make us no better than those we are fighting?

I think it's also very important when a person is placed certain positions, All background information needs to be taken into account.

I am of middle eastern decent. My father was born in Iraq (came over to the states for college and married my mom then had us kids). He got his doctorate and is still a practicing psychiatrist. He does not practice religion and never has, though me and my bro/sis were raised Christian by my mother (and still are). I am going to school for nursing with a focus on psychology. Sorry to ...

I think that's a very valid point kval. On one hand, I totally see where you and other military personnel may have huge issues with being counseled by someone of the same faith/appearance/etc as the people you have had to be suspicious of while in a war not long before. I would think the same thing may have be true of say, Vietnam vets only having the option of seeing a Vietnamese counselor. I...

I do not believe jobs should be withheld from people based on their ethnicity (or gender or...). I do think that if a trauma victim is more comfortable with someone else even based on religion or ethnicity, it's more important that they get the help they need than to make issue of diversity and tolerance at that time. I do apply that logic to other victims of trauma as well (assault, rape, etc.).

I would hope that no one is banned from counseling based on such.
